Multi question quiz--did i make the right decision, and why?

Ok, i made a number of decisions last night, and eventually came home $20 ahead, when i probably shouldve came home up a lot more. at one point i couldve came home in the $1800s again instead of the $1600s. or should i just be happy i didnt lose?

so i woke up about a half hour before 114am, and by the time i was ready to leave, called samstown on the phone, and found out that AGAIN the game had just broke, which was really odd since it was thurs morning between midnite and 6am, where the $100 aces cracked is in effect for ANY aces, along with the other $1000 for flopping quads. i did get money at boulder station last night for flopping quads.

so i decided to go up the street to eastside cannery, closest place to walk to, and i knew id still have aces cracked til 3am, and could always jump on the boulder hwy bus to boulder station or downtown, or even the 202 flamingo bus to the palms or nearby. (such as terribles, walking short ways to hardrock, wynn, V, etc). wasnt sure if that was the right decision, option 2 wouldve been to just plan to take the bus downtown boulder hwy and go to the nugget.

as i was walking to the eastside cannery, i couldnt get bravo live working, so i couldnt call the cannery, so i saw a bus coming, and jumped it to boulder station, i had my laptop with me also. (i brought it to stay off the VP). Now i did consider that a good decision, although i worried it might get stolen if i opened it in public, like on the bus. (and it couldve got lost, i left it behind at boulder station and was relieved security found it before someone else did). I had checked with the cannery the day before if it was ok to sit at an empty table using my laptop while i waited for my seat to be open, and got the OK.

so i get to boulder, take a seat in the $2-4 game with ANY royal paying $5000. (and the BBJ) not much happens in the game, game gets short, and then i hit a HHJ for flopping quads for $160 and gave the dealer $10 which ended up being a mistake as little profit as i came home with. game soon broke, and i went out to the VP machine. not to play it for real money (was i lying to myself?) but to redeem $5 points into free play. i ran it up to $17 and then on a martingaled losing series, inserted a $100 to make the next bet, lost, and kept playing. ended up losing $40+. at one point was down more.

came back to play $4-8 omaha high, definitely a mistake, but left when i saw i was going to have my blind straddled, and went to catch the bus to samstown as the stud game was about to open. (a great example of WHY i am awake the wrong hours). no ones commented on poker Johnnys 24 hour casino suggestion, but i am awake the worst possible hours for what i should be playing.)

and of course no ones commented why its always so hot in my apt in the middle of winter without me even turning the heat on that i posted about on twitter. Nor on alot of them weird dreams ive ever discussed. One thing im glad to say is for whatever reason, ive not seen a roach in a long time.

so i played stud at samstown, when that was probably the wrong decision. (other option being to go home and eat since i hadnt ate and play online since that game kind of isnt beatable with the heavy rake and good players). i sat there 2+ hours and lost $25 or so. when the omaha8 game opened (and it WAS a good game as far as the action--i moved to it). But i was starting to feel frustration being ready to eat, and giving back so much of what id been up earlier, i couldnt play my best, and dont that mean u should leave even if the game is really loose, and u need to stay awake during these hours instead of the hours i know ill be waking up tonight going home then? some people say if i dont feel like playing, regardless of if i need the hours, dont play.

anyway i lost about $60 in the omaha and left. no real hands except for 3 really nice ones that missed everything. scooping one big pot wouldve got it all back, but i never had any pieces of pots. i felt bad leaving such a good game after being in bad ones all night, but after already playing for 8-10 hours, didnt feel like playing anymore. wanted to eat, and relax at home online.

so i think i made the RIGHT decision in leaving.

and now i think im making the right decision by going to sleep, going back out to play to fix my hours wont be good, i sure cant win now. i got to sleep when my body needs rest. the only way to really fix hours is to be in a casino hotel with alarm clock and phone, and then force myself up if i could walk to the poker room after say 5-6 hours sleep and then go back up. when i have to travel to play, (travel to me is not being at the casino to live) then i get into a routine thats hard to adjust.

  1. Tony, you could very easily fix your schedule by simply taking a day or two off from gambling. Read a book. Watch TV. Go for a walk, etc. And then get your sleep schedule straight.

And doesn't your phone have an alarm on it?

    1. i shut it off when asleep, so im not disturbed by calls, and like i said, it might be NOT a good idea medically to try to force my body to change what its been accustomed to for 20 yrs. if i wasnt gambling, id still get tired the same times, why would he think otherwise?

    2. Tony, you are a grown man. If you want to change your sleep schedule, you can just do it. I'm not a doctor (but I banged an M.D. one time), but I'm sure you'd be in no medical danger.

    3. Tony, this will really blow your mind:

I along with about 5000 other co workers work a 4 on 5 off schedule that looks like this

      7am to 7 pm
      7 am to 7 pm
      7 pm to 7 am
      7 pm to 7 am
      Off for 5 days

    4. We change our sleep hours every two days! All year round! Isn't that just the craziest thing you've ever heard?

Also, does anyone else out there have the problem that this site just randomly stops letting you type any more letters on iPhone? Or is it because I am using google chrome for iPhone browser?

    5. Bigshow, that work schedule is crazy. There had been tons of research showing disruption of your sleep cycle due to changing shifts is bad for your health. Your schedule is probably one of the worst I've seen.

  2. Maybe taking a few more 20 hour naps will fix your sleep schedule?

I'm not smart enough to find the quiz but it seemed like you:

    Played poker (good)
    Played machines (bad)
    Slept (neutral)

Or, you know, you did exactly what you've done every day for the last five-ten years. And exactly what you'll continue to do regardless of the quiz results.

Definitely try the 20 hour naps, though. Now that I think about it, you're exactly like Thomas Edison. He took a lot of naps too, although usually a little shorter than your naps.

  3. You couldn't call the cannery.
    Bravo app was not working.

Those are mutually exclusive, not inclusive.

  4. You think that your poker skill is comparable to Stu Ungar. Ungar won the WSOP main event three times. You find a $2-4 limit game and try to get your aces cracked or flop quads so you get jackpot money.

My mind is blown at the comparison.

    3. This is one of the main reason why this format sucka. It is hard to figure out where the new comments are, especially once a new blog post is up.

    4. Once a new post pops up I stop reading the old ones even if there are new comments.

I don't care enough to go back and continue discussions (or see their conclusions) when there is already something new to make fun of

  6. You would have an easier time trying to bring down the Hoover Dam with a hammer than beat that super tight 1_5 stud game mornings at Sams Town. Southpoint is to far for you. The only other "profitable" 2-4 tables in town are wed. thru sunday 7pm to 3am at the flamingo. PLAYING 2-4 against old men in the daytime cannot be beat. Why are you playing against the tightest locals? Why are you playing locals period?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. the MOST profitable $2-4 is at the nugget, (tourists awful, and at terribles, lots of service industry employees on the night shift, and less drop.) also its not the case at the 2 locations i mentioned, but USUALLY for $2-4 to be beatable, there needs to be a large aces cracked payout going for multiple hours

samstown dont offer $2-4 and i dont think the places i have played it at are tight.

      Delete
    2. I'll take your word for it as far as the Nugget goes, I don't ever play downtown. Aces cracked is not an easy promo to find anymore if you look for that sort of thing. 2-4 Isn't an easy thing to find anymore either in a room with a majority of tourists. Why I mention Southpoint is because at night it is a lot of locals but they are neither tight or very good But like I said it would be hard for you to get to. They also have a 150k freeroll in April which would be a good deal for you with the hours you put in and they have a lower rake for 2-4. I think it's 3-1. Flamingo is also beatable at night but I don't know if that's one of the places you can't play or not.

      Delete
    3. samstown too has a freeroll ill qualify for feb 10 i found out.

  7. I would definitely avoid the $4-8 Omaha Game at Boulder. It is very easy to drop money there. I have left down a couple hundo without feeling I did much wrong. I don't think you can afford it.

  8. It is fascinating how you are so concerned with the beatability of rake, while simultaneously happily donating away to -EV and incredibly improbable promotions, and spewing away thousands at -EV machines that are designed for you to lose.

Whatever happened to your diamond card? Haven't heard you brag about taking an Internet babe to the diamond lounge for some free meatballs and mini spring rolls in exchange for some heavy hand holding action.

    1. I believe that Tony took lightning36 to the Diamond lounge at Harrah's Joliet. I'm not sure if there was any heavy hand holding, but I'm fairly sure there were meatballs there.

  9. 1. not enough money yet, and certainly wouldnt be a good idea til im sure my mailing address would not change during the next 2 months. already worry harrahs mightve wrote me and got their letter returned, (which wouldnt looked good).

    2. not sure yet. wish i had friends like u to hang out anytime i felt the urge. it would assist. we tried counseling and when i followed the counselors advice (to have people like claudia to call anytime,--instead of waiting til my next appt with the counselor-- and to write down my feelings, we all know where following that counselors advice got me dont we?)

    Tony:

I appreciate your responses to my questions. However, for #1, I'm not asking why you don't try to get the ban lifted right now (although I do think it's worth trying now, while you have a lot of "down time") - but you didn't try when you had a 10k+ roll, either. Why haven't you ever attempted this?

#2: No, you didn't try counseling. You went to 2 sessions. And the fall out with Claudia was not the result of the counselor's suggestion. You know why that fell apart. It sounds like you still have no plan to effect change in your life.

Do you think it's because you haven't hit bottom? I'm guessing that's what it's going to take. Homelessness - living on the street. Unfortunately, at that point your resources will be so limited, due to your choices, that it will be exceedingly difficult. But I'm guessing that's what it's gonna take, buddy.

    1. Tony. Why don't you contact the mgmt of the place you are staying and ask them to look into this heating issue. DUH

      Delete
    2. I will extend two reasons....

Firstly, if the building uses forced air heat even if you have your thermostat set to OFF you should still close the vents on the heat ducts. Or even better, use DUCT tape to seal them off.

Secondly, if the building uses hotwater baseboard heat there is a chance the thermostat is not working and hot water is still flowing through the system in your room.

Those are the two best guess reasons i can float out at this point with limited info on the underlying technologies involved.

      Regards, Lester

    3. im not that concerned about it, no harms being done by getting all that extra heat. even had to crank up cold air at times. its just ODD i think.

  11. won $132 at samstown, very surprised to find a game when i got over there after 4.30am waking up after 3am. at one point was up over $200 and also i shouldve just left when the holdem game broke. the stud game there isnt good, just a waste of time, nothing like the old days.

    ReplyDelete
  12. The easiest way to change your sleep schedule is to stay up one hour extra each day until you are on the right schedule. The human body actually runs on a 25-hour sleep cycle. When people have sleep disorders and need to change their sleep hours, sleep clinics often use this technique. I don't know what hours you want, but if you slowly change your sleep patterns, it'll be easier than doing it all at once.

  13. am home playing low stakes ($7 and under) sngs online some hyper turbos, which i dont understand why some think i wouldnt understand how to play. who needs to play them PERFEctly? being better than ur opponents is all that matters in the long run.

when my opponents are calling my allins preflop with Q3 against my AQ (long before blinds and stack sizes make this neccessary) and the board comes 33K3, i know im bound to show a longterm profit over my opponents.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The edge good players have over bad players are small (relative to regular SNGs), the variance is higher, and you can't be bothered to study the proper strategies to play the game. Hyper turbos are great for rakebacks when you mass multi-table them, but you need to have sufficient BR.

I talked to someone last week, who has been getting Super Nova Elite status the last few years on pokerstars. He plays up to 60 tables of DON or Fifty50 tables. His typical work day consists of 4-5 hours on the table, and 2 hours going over hand histories, discussion with fellow players over hands and strategies, and reading pokers books or watch instructional videos. He works 4-5 days a week. He gets over $100k by achieving super nova elite, he did not say what his win rates from playing is.

You on the other hand, has limited BR, don't study the game, player 1 or 2 tables at a time. Even if you are a winning player at hyper turbos, your win rate is going to be so low, it is going to be a waste of time. On top of that, the variance is high, so the chances of you going on a big downswing, and cascades into more money spewing monkey tilt is quite high. This is a terrible risk/reward proposition.

  14. Is there ever a point where the results of your day to day decision making ever take precedence over your arrogance?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Since you're talking poker, I thought it might be a good time to get your feedback on a hand you played recently. Especially since it's basically a 2-for-1 deal, with you and Stuey Ungar thinking so much alike when it comes to poker, I can get feedback from you and Stuey all at the same time.

I've been working on my PLO game lately and I'm nowhere near as good as you and Stuey but I'm still plugging away. I had a few questions about this hand:

    https://www.pokertableratings.com/replayer/index.php?site=cake&key=1356945831&hash=24683467019

Limping preflop: I guess I'm not as creative as you and Stuey but I'd think this was a fold preflop when first to act. If I was going to play it, I'd at least min-raise. Are you limping here just because them other players are so bad?

Cold-calling the 4-bet preflop: Again, I guess I'm just not very good but that seems like a fold to me. If it was just the three-bet to call and you knew that guy was terrible, maybe I could see a call out of position but probably not even that. But man, that takes a soul read from you and Stuey to cold-call the 4 bet there with a hand like yours! What did you put both the raisers on there, something like 5566 ds and some other random hand? Of course you know that normally someone has a bigger pair or suited overcards, etc. so you're behind pretty much everything they'd be raising with.

Calling the 6 bet prefop: Wow! You and Stuey really are creative players. You put about 1% of your entire net worth on the line with 661010 ds versus two opponents who seem to love their hands! I could never be such a creative, instinctive player like that! You said that you and Stuey would make moves like this all the time that other people can't understand who watch you play, so if you could explain your thinking here I'm sure we'd all learn a lot.

    1. Wow, that seems truly horrid. Tony, can you explain the play in this hand?

  16. you should try to play from around 4pm to 3-4 am range, people get really sloppy right after midnight makes for some juice, however i guess with the games your playing now many will go down on weekdays so 12-12 isnt a bad range either. maybe try splitting the time up into a few 2-3 smaller sessions throughout the day if your able to get to a few different locations, i find i start playing bad if i go to long.

  17. just waking up from a dream where i was in a poker game, and had A2358 and 4 daimonds on 5th street, (hilo game) and was being raised by a guy with garbage showing. i was told at the end of the hand that i had too many $1s, and that security would have to trade them in for something else, because its too easy to bust open the $1, and take out the "single shotgun shell". so then im standing at the front of the bus, waiting to get paid, and my money exchanged, while the same security guard is confiscating some asian guys crack pipes.
