Outside of Vegas

my room here in Jean is taken care of up til 11am wednesday morning, and im happy to report with todays $25 win, my roll is back in the $1000s instead of the $900s. of course that includes the final $17 i have on my walmart debitcard thats not enough to take out of the ATM, but can only be spent on purchases. (while at the stratosphere, i removed the other $260 off the debit card, costing me $266.) i didnt lose that at the stratosphere, only lost about $10 there, all the loss was at TX station, but i did use the ATM there.

am spending way too much time in the room online, and not nearly enough time grinding out the VBJ machine for comps. i only earned $2 in comps today for all the time i played, and ive got to earn $12 a day comps, $15 fridays and $30 saturdays to have my room.

is there a way to record a video of me playing an online sng? i dont see how with only a built in webcam, and the revolution network (lock) dont make it easy copying and pasting an entire games HH. maybe theres a way to copy/paste but im not familiar with it. things like this were so easy on stars.

all i really want is to know if i am playing the hyper turbos correctly, because if not, i should only play the DON sngs. i played a $7 one (too high i know) for the $26 i had on lock, and lost it. an earlier today a guy offering me free coaching on twitter, but he told me he wouldnt be the right guy for sngs, he is a deepstacked cash game player for holdem, and thats what he was offering to coach me on, supposedly online id guess.

anyway first hand of the 300 chip hyper turbo. (whole table starts with 10 BB and levels go up very quickly). not sure how many readers besides vook is qualified to answer. i really have no idea who plays a lot of these. these are also played 6 handed instead of 10 handed. i am on the button, and the SB is 15 and the BB is 30. everyone folds to me and i have 89 suited. i shoved, both blinds folded. correct? i am pretty sure i dont make a min raise or not be aggressive.

sometime later, there are 5 of us left, top 2 get paid. one guy is short stacked with 120 chips, 40 of which he posted in the BB. the small blind has 405. everyone folds to me again. i have 260 chips, blinds are 20-40. i still believe aggressiveness is the correct way to play, so i shove. i had Q8 offsuit. SB folds, BB calls with 99 and im suddenly down to 140 in chips, and exit shortly thereafter. steve G was on the phone with me later for about an hour, and he said to never min raise in these. although im sure sometimes u should, probably with monsters.

steve G has been talking to me all week about moving my blog to a website hes going to buy, and later creating a forum on there again to improve the comments. He said that him, I and possibly seattle irish would be the moderators. and for whatever reason he dont seem to like WEC and was surprised wec and poker.24amp was the same guy. he kept saying he would WU me $100 upfront to buy it, but is seriously now not that interested because he didnt like my google analytic stats, the fact i had not that many twitter followers, that 90% of the blog readers are just repeats, and he claims a certain website claims my blog is only worth $56. also now he claims i will probably go bust, and then fears i wont blog because id have nothing to talk about. the old plan was for me to not tell the readers til after it happened, and to then give him the password once i received the WU, and he would fix things so clicks to sevencard2003.blogspot.com automatically got rerouted to his new site. and of course i was to have full control over what i posted. and the ability to ban assholes. most of which i dont ban anyway. he also wanted me to make a video in which i talked for a while, and i dont know what to say or how to do it and wasnt that comfortable because i felt people would use it to make fun of me, but of course for the $100 i mightve. i just felt like i needed a lot more upfront, and he said the blog isnt worth that, and that he would later on share in the google adsense and other revenue he could receive in the future. for some reason, he thinks that video would attract far more views, and i think it would not make a bit of difference. he was also afraid id lose interest in blogging after im broke and said he really wishes i could somehow stay over $2500 so id keep grinding on. also he said donkeytax had to be lying about his $2-6 results for the 500 hours, and that no one could beat that for $17 an hour longterm.

will be down to $4 on lock instead of $14 left if i lose this $5 10 handed DON. i lost a $5 one a while ago after losing the $7 hyper turbo. and also a $2 one. i might consider redepositing to grind poker in my room if thats a better way to make money, but the big question is how much as little as i have. i do need at least 10 buyins, so would $50 be too much, or should it actually be more? if thats all the poker im playing maybe i need more in there. what game should i sit at if i want the other guy to watch and give the free coaching?

shouldve found a way to do my laundry before i came here, down to the last 2 clean shirts now. also i wish i couldve got more food on the way here, only got 2 cans of tuna and 7 soups. food costs about 6x as much here as the food4less or walmarts.

  1. Lots of truth to what Steve g says about your blog including the video.

He's also right about not min raising In hypers. It's really shove or fold. Although a min raise is fine with a monster hand if you think the players behind will open their ranges more and shove. He just means generally you shouldn't min raise.

To be honest those are both good questions on the 98s and Q8 hands. Both are borderline. Since you realize they are borderline that's a good thing. I personally fold both of those hands but i wouldn't be surprised if both are shoves against the right players or if I'm wrong. It really depends on what rheyre calling ranges are. Of the two im more comfortable shoving 98s since there is a mot of fold equity. You have the right idea that shoving (over folding) is the default correct choice in a hyper

The biggest spot for focus in a hyper is going to be when it's 3 handed not really 5 or 6 handed. The mistakes you make 3 handed prob make 10 times more of a difference. Focus on those spots for now. You can get five free searches on www.icmizer.com. Plug in the hand histories there and take a guess on what the villains calling ranges are (or play it with so you get a feel)

Also I only played a little more than 1K hypers on merge. I actually lost money even when u count rakeback. My red line was above break even which suggests I could've/should've done better (but red line is unreliable). I also played 300 on full tilt to clear bonus. I broke even there wheras i had about a 20% ROI on full tilt at other 1 table SNGs. 'm not sure I can beat them. It's too small of a sample. I was trying to see if I can make tons of rakeback with them since I had such a good rakeback deal. Now that merge changed their rakeback structure I've stopped playing them because I don't think I'm good enough and/or can make more money elsewhere.

Again you need to play 2000-3000 hyper turbos minimum to get closer to a true ROI. Right now is probably the worst time for you to play these unless you truly are trying to double up or go homeless

    Good luck

PS. I like WEC. He's been a very helpful resource to me on 2+2 numerous times.

    1. vook, im mostly playing at the 80c level, im sure the players arent very good at that level, nor at the $1.50 level. i dont think those stakes will cause a big downswing, but yeah with as little as i had in lock shouldnt have played a $7 one.

    2. I know this is your "find a way to defend my play no matter what" default mode kicking in, but this is a pretty terrible way for any professional poker player to think.

You, the great TBC, are playing at that level. Don't make assumptions about their skill level based on the stakes. Learn ICM and how to play DONs or hypers correctly and then play them correctly.

The reason Vook and others keep telling you to play DONs is that they're the form of poker that's closest to having been "solved". A math and big puzzle genious such as yourself should be able to master DON strategy pretty easily. The only thing holding you back is your laziness.

    3. You truly don't get it - over the short run it doesn't matter how good anyone is, with as high variance as these are.

You can be playing against the worst players in the world and still get wiped out. THEY ARE HYPER TURBOS.

It's amazing how little knowledge you absorb with how much time you spend online, and how you think $1 hands of blackjack and $.80 turbos are better than working.

As for your how much to put online question, your first losing session will lead to you busting it all trying to get even so it really doesn't matter.

  2. I would not give anyone the password to your blog, even if that means turning down money.

If you give someone your password they can change the settings to hijack your blog, and there's not much you can do about it.

If you want a forum for commenting you already have one that you disabled.. that free proboards forum. No need to give someone control of your blog for that.

    1. who cares what they do, as long as i get the $100? the $100 means far more to me than the blog does, id gladly give up the blog. i could always restart a blog anytime. its not ME that wants the forum, its the guy who was considering buying me out and moving me to site he wanted to create and sell ads on. of course id not give out the password without the cash first. thats why i wouldnt take paypal.

    2. I am sure the guy wants to pay you to move your blog, so that you can CONTINUE to blog there. Saying you could always restart a blog somewhere else while you are negotiating a deal, is either a brilliant business move, or the most stupid self sabotage.

    this is absolutely insane. :(

  4. How many times has it worked out for you when people promised to make you famous -- even sending you a little money upfront -- and offered to split all that money you'll make?

Don't you think it's a strange coincidence that good ol' Steve G. comes out of the woodwork with such a generous offer just when you're at your lowest point as far as your bankroll?

Of course he wants you to create videos so he/readers can laugh at you.

Your shove with 89s is okay but shoving with Q8o in that spot is pretty terrible. The BB is committed to call with a huge range there so you've got pretty much zero fold equity. Shoving with that hand (or any two cards) would be fine if he had 400 chips instead; do you see why?

Your biggest mistake was playing a $7 hyper turbo to begin with. Get Vook to pull your full Sharkscope results for SnGs by game type and stake. Find the format and stakes that you've lost the least money at in the past that fits your current bankroll. (Hint: it's $1 DONs)

  5. have gained $41 total on the VBJ grinding out small bets, not one hand over $7 since arriving in town. most bets $1 of course. but still only earned $5 in comps, so im not getting in nearly enough play. as small as bets are, earning the room takes a ton of hours. i cant believe $1200 coinin takes so long, but it deals so few hands an hour it does. noticed the coffepot is missing in the room to where i cant heat up soups, but they are giving me another one.

    2. Tony, you realize how unhealthy of a diet instant noodles is right? They have no nutritional value whatsoever, and insane sodium.

  6. and i really need a lift roundtrip to the laundrymat 30 miles away badly, and about $10 worth of food from a food4less store such as crackers, and more roman noodle soups, and whatever else dont need refrigerated or cooked, or eaten immediately. whatever day is most convenient for u, and im letting u know ahead of time. also does anyone know of a program called camstudio? i was told it would record my screen for me while i played. and if i downloaded it i could do that. hopefully its free

  7. downloaded it and practicing recording now as i play 2 sngs with the final $4 on lock

    1. I don't have experiences with videos, but to take a wild shot at this, try to shut down your computer (not put it in hibernation), and start it up again to upload. Don't open the file before you upload it.

  11. Tony, if you want someone to pay you to do work, it has to be something that is USEFUL FOR THEM. The world doesn't revolve around you like you always act like it does.

And FYI, if you hurt yourself (seriously) working, you can get on disability.

  12. So to summarize, you're finding it hard to get in enough hours at the VBJ, so you've decided to play $1 hypers - a form of poker in which even Stu Ungar (and yourself)couldn't make more than pennies per table per hour, and additionally you're attempting to make video recordings thereby using up even more time?

Your plan must be more cunning than I can fathom.

  13. "is there a way to record a video of me playing an online sng?"

    CamStudio. It's basic but it's 100% free.

  15. Put the video on YouTube and then post the YouTube link here?

    Is there commentary?

  16. If you're seriously spending 8+ hours grinding VBJ for comps now, perhaps you should change your blog title to "Grinding Dem Machines"?

  17. Another screen capturing web site is www.screencast-o-matic.com. It is very easy to use, but since it is free it is limited to 15-minute videos. Just like CamStudio, the easiest way to share your videos is by posting to YouTube (you can create a private account to where the only way to access the video is through the link, instead of through a YouTube search). Good luck.
