finally, a better day (Pala Trip report) and i need to be getting back to vegas--only had a room once in 5 days.

Man it feels good to be back at the Commerce (took the shuttle bus from Pala to Rosemead and then took the 20 montebello bus up to Gage and Telegraph) and then jumped on the 62 to the commerce. (although i almost got off the bus at the motel 6 in rosemead with the $49 sign out). And im tired. I didnt want to sleep with my friend whose broke and desperate for money in a shitty bus depot in Gardena in a bad neighborhood with $500 on me, (hope he gets a bankroll together) so instead of staying at Pala waiting for the last tour bus of the night into Gardena along with him--i jumped on the first one i saw out of there. and got very little sleep on the way back up. Good thing i got such a long rest yesterday at the motel in Escondido. it wasnt in the best area of Escondido, and its normally $49 a night. Next time in that area ive now found out about better hotel options. But yeah im tired and i cant wait for the bus to start up in the morning. need to get into vegas quickly for PPP and lightning.

Bought into the game at the commerce with $40, lost it to the same donkey who at one point had over $600 in front of him with 88 preflop against his 67 offsuit (yes he called my allin reraise with that) why wouldnt i reraise and isolate--hes raising 93% of his hands. rebought $9, won a pot, was back to about $42 and then eventually lost it, rebought $20 and finally got aa and left the game with $110 ($41 of which was profit). i only rebought $9 the first time to avoid breaking the $100 bill.

The casino at Pala has a very small poker room with some decent promotions. they do high hands every hour some days, aces cracked some times of the day, and pay up to $5 an hour cashback with some racing for dollars promo.

The main floorman used to work at the Trop in AC, and i think banned me on 2 occasions. theres usually only 1 or 2 tables going at Pala, main game seems to be $1-2 NL. and the payouts and options really suck on the VBJ, (and betting limits) its not worth playing. and the 100play machine forces u to bet at least $1 total bets so its not worth playing either. u do make $15 in free play everytime u take the bus though--so sometimes homeless people ride it to SLEEP free of charge or to collect that money. Pechanga also gives out the free play too.

the players are quite bad, lots of button straddles, and they do it the way Rob and I hate, instead of the correct way a more classy joint like the Golden Nugget does it. some of the guys raise over 80% of the time preflop, so u can make money in the long run nitting it up with $40.

i played the game 3 sessions. and had 1 win of $66 profit, one win of $67 profit, and one win of $232 profit. no losses at Pala. (except the $64 i donked off in the $3-6 limit waiting for the game to start) so its a good place to play so far. they let me check my bag without asking if i was a hotel guest and the wifi there works great, even out on the outdoor patio and theres a plugin outdoors too. and it dont block all the things commerce blocks. i heard the hustler is even worse about blocking things. (i dont think any of my readers play at the Hustler and if thats the case--i dont blame them for not playing there).

another thing i want to do when back in vegas is test out that new PLO8 on UP--and i guess ill have to pay for a room a week since i cant stay at Vinces til the 25th. man is that going to set me back a ton--ill not be able to afford to play in the games PPP and lightning will want to play. But right now--im so tired--all i can think of is sleeping a good long nap 7am to 1230pm on the mexican tour bus into vegas for $25.

am still of the opinion cali is a better place to play than vegas--if i can only resolve the option of where to stay--im too old to be sleeping on buses and not having a room--and i just dont feel safe sleeping outdoors in a sleeping bag--as cheap as it would be to sleep daily on a train--its a better option than wasting a ton on hotels or sleeping outdoors and if i have a unlimited travel pass i cant be made to get off. thats why other homeless people also do it (but very few since most dont have the money). Biggest issue with playing too far south in cali is they wont store ur bag at some of the casinos further south.

One of the players at the table in Pala said hed read my blog if i mention Gregs name, but i cant remember which player is Greg. all i remember is which player is Vinny.

  1. Good news that you have a couple of winning sessions. However, I can't for the life of me understand why you feel the need to rush back to Vegas (where you have consistently lost money lately) just to meet up with PPP and Lightning for a few hours. You admitted that this trip to Vegas is going to cost you hundreds of bucks in expenses, at a time when your roll is still very vulnerable.

You need to stay put in CA, and grind for while.

By the way, re-buying for $9 is just about the most absurd thing that I have ever read on your blog, and I have been following you for at least 7 or 8 years!

    1. well thats what friends do---and id have probably also spent the same hundreds of expenses in cali--and im just too old to be doing without a place to live. (the only way to avoid those same expenses in cali is to not have a room) and i wasnt always winnning in cali either. i still dont fully believe ive lost my ability to beat the game in vegas either--i won for so many years i think i might just be running poor due to being on too short of money to play my best. rebuying in for $9 worked out great--i won a 5 way quintuple up off my AJ suited after rebuying in $9 and id have had to fold preflop had i bought in for more.

    2. I have already recommended to Tony that he stay in CA. There will always be other trips. Plus I likely won't have a car.

    3. robracing sounds like a newbie to playing poker. He sounds like a wanna be type player with no real amount of winning sessions under his poker belt. He would never make it bad in the old limit days before t.v. made him feel like he was hollywood material. I like the thought of his 9 dollar buy in.

    4. WTF no car, lightning? that means no trip to JEAN the degen gamblers paradise.y come to vegas if not to drive TBC to JEAN and get some ramon noodles 4 the poker pro.well ,at least , keep P3 away from that miller lite

    5. Triple P is probably getting ready to down a Lite in his limo right now ...

  2. i only rebought $9 the first time to avoid breaking the $100 bill.

I don't play much cash (mostly tournaments), so asking: Is this the best way to decide how much to buy or rebuy in for? I always thought it was better to buy in for at least 100 big blinds if they let you. Just asking.

    1. yeah for me it is--because breaking $100 when i dont need to bugs me (so it would be harder for me to play my best) its most important for me to get rid of distractions that prohibit me from playing my best. also the proper buyin is different for everyone its always either 1 30th up to 1 50th of ur entire net worth. many people play way too high, and many others play way too low, but for those with another means of income--it dont matter if they play too high or too low--they do however, need to realize--if they buyin the wrong amounts instead of by my formula recommended by experts--theyll never amount to anything in poker.

    2. mojo u should buy in min of 50 at least.TBC just plays bingo poker aka scared poker.hope to hit the flop and shove. as a player my x gf use to deal to called it SNIPER poker. 1 bullet or buyin and if hit or get big pocket pair preflop FIRE. rathole poker at its finest

    3. So you are saying since you only had $9 in front of you, you won more money than if you have the full $40? That doesn't compute for me.

      Delete
    4. What am I suppose to buy in for if my net worth is $500,000?

      Delete
    5. id suggest bringing along 1% and breaking it up into $2500 twice at $5-10 or $10-20 NL

    6. You really don't understand net worth has nothing to do with BR. I own a house, cars, stock ect. Has nothing to do with BR. My BR is completely separate.

      Delete
    7. So it was a trick question. The thing is, everyone already knows that Tony's networth IS his BR. What was your point of asking this question?

  3. ended up taking a motel room for a week thats convenient, not that expensive, but the internet will not work unless u go to the office. so i paid for Cricket to come back on so i could use it from my room. but i dont like this too much because now i wont be able to play on UP like i planned, guess ill have to wait another week for Vinces family to move out. Slept the entire way on the bus but am so tired i need some sleep before i head over to any casinos. as of best estimate til i investigate more fully, my roll was at $1929 when leaving the commerce, $1898 when boarding the bus, and is now at $1703

  4. I agree with you Tony. If you keep your mind in a good place you can play with less stress about breaking the 100 dollar bill. The name of this game is bust out hold 'em. It is a very hard game to grind out playing everyday. So keeping a positivie frame of mind is much more important than losing a few dollars on a had that may come down to a coin flip. With that limit and a max 40 buy in, using nine dollars isn't that bad at all. The lower buy in will enable Tony to grab much better odds on his nine dollars than worrying about isolating with a forty dollar buy in and losing to a lucky draw. Glad to see you made money over there.

  5. am happy to report that i now have my phone back, and had my first successful winning session since returning to vegas. i turned $89 in total buyins into $150, and left for a $61 profit, new roll $1764. also my rooms still paid for the week, and i need to get me a bus pass, cause i want to ride a few buses, theres 2 different very low stakes games id like to play in not the easiest to get to, and also i need to get to a place i can use wifi preferably a stations casino so i can start checking out the PLO8 on UP.

  6. am glad to report a win of $106 at the Golden nugget now has my roll at $1847. and i lost $3 of the $20 while playing on UP at the gold spike, and yes the UP money is counted as part of my roll because unlike bovada--i know how much can be withdrawn, and unlike seals, the value dont fluctuate from day to day. had the usual double up with 777 while playing for a very brief session at the nugget. they were awful busy in there tonight since Binions is no longer doing their promotion. 2 tables close to being full at 5-6am in the morning.

  7. am happy to report ZERO losing sessions so far in vegas. new roll $1961. just turned $100 into $214 very briefly at the nugget flopping JJJ against a made straight, and then hitting a full house. so i immediately left and went over to the gold spike to use the wifi and PPP is playing at Ballys right now if SI wants to find him.

  8. Tony I may out and about late tonite if you are playing somewhere I may stop by. Didn't know you made it back to Vegas. Leavin tommorow early.

  9. i didnt see tatudes comment til i got home after 1am dead tired (sending a text when he first got to vegas wouldve been much better idea), and i hung out late with PPP and his buddy, but he wouldnt move off the $1-3 NL game to come play with me. i was playing $2-6 spread limit at the Palms, and later moved to the $4-10 spread limit when it started up having never played $4-10 or seen it. i was stuck $181 once, lost $72 of it on VP, and got within $36 of being even, then eventually lost $177 and left with PPP and his friend. am now dead tired and sleeping. new roll about $1875 or so. i have poor luck in games other than NL, so i think i should go back to cali soon, its the only affordable game readily available. either that or my sample size too small.

    1. Was the VP +EV or -EV? Do you even care?

    2. about 97% payback, why would i cared? i was stuck and pissed off

    3. Good point. Nothing wrong with a little recreational gambling to blow off some steam.

    4. Tony why do you keep making the same mistakes over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and expect different results?

      Delete
  10. You should care because losing on VP is your biggest leak in Vegas. I finally gave it up because, 1) pay tables are terrible and getting worse 2) Comps accrue at a much lower rate 3) I due not play enough to overcome the expected loss waiting for that one big hand to bail you out. -EV is -EV why keep chasing losses by losing more. I have much more success scouting every casino I go in for slots that have 'must go' progressives that are near the tripping point. Soon enough you know every one and when they usually hit and can make a game of it wandering in and out of places. Enjoying free drinks, people watching, having fun.
