dealers listen up--this is how u earn a $5 tip on a $200+ pot. u have to make a real effort to make a losing hand a winning hand

This blog will explain how i got to be over $10,000 and how im just lucky. Even with $90 spent on a cab tonight, im still over $10,000. $10,145 to be exact. Plus $70 spent on a hotel room including tax.

if anyone dont yet know, the previous day or so id gotten back to $9600 from the big drop id had one morning at the Peppermill between BJ and VP. had so many winning sessions at $1-2 NL my roll went up all day long, and to cap it off i won $110 on the VP machine at the atlantis at the end of the night too.

This afternoon i woke up about 2pm and went to the Peppermill and started playing. I've been getting annoyed a lot by my phone while im playing because it keeps getting worse and worse and i desperately need a new one. it shuts off on its own randomly, takes time rebooting, err messages come up closing out programs, and spot mobile is closing down sept 4 and i need a new carrier. so thats an upcoming expense too, not just septembers rent.

so i wont stay this high for very long. but enjoy it while it lasts.

anyway i was in the game for $281, and paid $35 (counting the $5 tip) for a 20 minute massage, and had lost all my chips on a poor shove during the massage and rebought. i had 88, called $12 when i shouldnt being too shortstacked with about $70-80 is all, and then a guy whod initially just called in late position (not early position) made it $37, original better called. i felt them both weak so i shoved and they both called. Board comes AKTK4 and the guy who made it $37 mucks without showing after the other guy shows 99. (see i told u they were both weak. my read was right, guy was amazed he won with that board).

now in case someone didnt know, u are allowed to buyin up to the largest stack size on the table, or for only $40, which i think is a very good rule since it allows for such a wide spread. another really nice rule is u can straddle from ANY position up to half ur stack. funny thing is, ive never once seen anyone do it even the people who "like to gamble". why is everyone such chickens? they sure dont mind straddling in a dumb position, but always for small amounts.

anyway being down to $113 left of my $281, i was quite a bit on tilt, between that and the issues i was having getting my phone to work right, so i put the $55 straddle out there, leaving $58 behind, and said ive got to try something NEW and see if its what im not doing that i should be doing.

old man whose a regular and normally plays $3-5, but dont play loose makes it $120 (he thought id put out $60) other lady calls with QQ, and we never saw what the old man had. so theres a $14 side pot, and i call allin with KT offsuit, but truthfully id have to call any 2 there. right?

board comes up 8J3 with 2 spades and i know im fucked. guy checks, lady shoves, he folds. I'm already allin, so she turns over QQ and takes the side pot, and i turn over KT drawing basically dead, but i win with runner runner spade spade i got K of spades. so i suddenly am out of the hole and ahead, and i threw the dealer a redbird since he had to work so hard to give me that pot.

after that i couldnt lose, and eventually cashed out well over $600. i know another hand was almost as memorable, but ive forgotten the details. i wish i had a memory like Rob. i do remember calling a guy down for large size bets with A9 on a board of A2TTJ with a third spade on the river who was bluffing and kept telling me im smart enough to fold and he would show. would u have called? he had 75 of hearts.

so i finally left the game when my roll hit $10,002. talked a cab driver outside the peppermill ive used before to go to walmarts into taking me to north lake tahoe, and NOT letting the meter go over $100, and he said he would for $90 since its slow and hes not working on comission and was his own boss.

turned out it took about 30 min longer to get here than it shouldve due to working on the road, and it being 1 lane only and having to wait a long time on the pilot car to return. the meter wouldve been $110.

i was very disappointed when i arrived at the Tahoe biltmore to find out the VBJ has been off for 2 days without power and they are waiting for it to be looked at by their tech and fixed. dammit this better be taken care of in the morning. hate to think i came out here for nothing. i did however pick up my $30 in free play and won a little on the VP with it. also theres a lot more tickets in the drum than id expected. couldnt see any of my 180 still in there.

so i went across the street to the other casino, and was surprised to see the BJ pit still open unlike the tahoe biltmore that closes the pit early. i talked the floorlady into making a $10 shoe game a $5 shoe game, and their rules were quite good.

i flat bet $5 every negative count, and bet whatever during neutral and plus counts. at one point i had $250 divided between 3 spots, and i hadnt even noticed the max bet sign of $200 (although that means 1 spot).

got quite lucky to win that hand, and left with a nice profit, and had over $10,200 before i took my room for tonight. to be honest i need to sleep once i hit submit. im playing a little while on bovada with the $135 left on here while i type. all 3 hands totalled 19, and the dealer as usual had an ace showing. but he also had a 7 in the hole.

  1. well Tony i am glad to see you are still a real gambler with your money and not a poker player who only plays when he is in great health and great frame of mind.keep on playing your machines and don't forget to martingale when you run into a low spot with your luck. THAT is the answer to all your money problems. Also don't get that tooth fixed as that would be a waste of money, as the massages from a woman who you have to pay and $90 taxi cab rides will do you right.......

  2. Heck of a post, Tony. $55 straddle, monkey shove with 8-8, $90 cab ride, $250 bj bet. I guess you are living the good life, huh?

  3. Congrats Tony! I'm thrilled you're over 10K. Time to spend money wisely. Invest in yourself. See a dentist and get yourself a new phone with a new contract. Both are totally worth the money.

    We are on fire!

    1. Yes Josie. And with $100 cab rides to go play VBJ in Tahoe, there's no ceiling in site.

  4. It's just you time, sir. . . . It's just your time . . .

As for having a memory "like Rob." I wonder if the notepad in Rob's pocket, along with the pens, could possibly explain why he is so good at recalling hands? Perhaps its a matter of effort, and not memory?

    1. I actually used to have a good enough memory that I didn't make notes on the hands until after the session was over, sometimes the next morning. But these days, I have to write them down at the table or I won't have the details right. In fact, if I don't write them down soon enough, I'm in trouble.

Of course, when I was playing limit, it was easier to remember because the bets were fixed and I didn't have to keep track of bet-sizes.

  5. Looks like you are on full blown donkey mode.

If you want to straddle with 1/2 your stack, does it matter if you do it UTG or on the button? Truly idiotic.

    1. the fact that i have the ability to try UNCONVENTIAL plays, and open up my game in a way others would be afraid to, is the very reason i can win at poker. (if u dont believe me, ask any young internet professional grinder). most people dont learn anything--because of their fear of trying things they feel are new and dumb. we all know just because something is stupid, that dont mean u should try it for the experience.

    2. This is the cocky Tony that spouts off just before he donks off a grand and blames it on the dealers, other gamblers or persons of color who happen to be in the immediate vicinity. Mr. Martingale is looking to take a bite out of you azz. You are already feeling like you are rich and spending money like there is no tomorrow. I dare you to prove me wrong.

    3. The problem lies in the fact that you can't tell the difference between an unconvention play and an idiotic one.

    4. Unless you have a big story about how it opens up your metagame to do this, that was stupid. All you are doing is rationalizing your tilt and/or addiction (need to win).

Oh and with the hands you describe I can't imagine any of the $1/$2 droolers in Reno being able to spell metagame

Now if you came on here and wrote it was a big rush to do that then suck out and win I would believe you.

Regardless I don't think you believe what you wrote. You just enjoy stirring up comments. It worked ;)

Congrats on having $10K. Control your ego and keep plugging away

  7. Reno don't want to turn into Atlantic City so they set their hold percentages on less. That is why your seeing these get out of jail free cards. These steam choices are no different than a drug habit. But i will cheer along with the rest of the blog groupies here for now.

  8. Do you actually think the dealer decides who is going to win the hand and then tries to make it happen?

Chickens? Maybe they're trying not to be donkeys. Maybe they're trying to play poker. Something you'll never do,

  10. and while we are on the topic of trying something new for the experience, how am i supposed to know if id like a sleeper car or not on a LONG trip to Toledo, Connecticut, or Los angeles? so instead of paying $16 to return to reno today, i paid $91 for the sleeper car to find out what one was like. the elderly black male attendent was extremely friendly and helpful, taking me on a tour of the sleeper compartments thats more expensive than the one i paid for (much bigger size) and then i went back to mine, and he showed me how to fix it into a bed, then left me undisturbed all the way into reno. told me how the free food works, showed me where the nearby coffeepot and bathroom was, and where theres a shower for sleeper car passengers downstairs. so i gave him a $5 tip, and took a nap into reno, that didnt last long. am still quite tired and will sleep very shortly.

  11. was quite disappointed to find out the VBJ wouldnt be fixed til tomorrow or later. spoke to the main casino manager in marketing office upstairs, and he took my cell number and promised to call me once its fixed. he called the shufflemaster office earlier that morning and gave me the best info they had. he couldnt take care of my room, but he said that was in Kristens dept and he would talk to her about it for next time. so i did get charged $67 for last nights room.

so i picked up my $2000 id put on deposit behind the cage, and decided to play a little more BJ in the shoe game across the street. but first i found out about an ATM promotion worth $50 a month. yes, they give u 5% in free play for anything took out of the atm, so i withdrew $1000 more for $50 in free play. (they limit it to $50 a month) this will be easy money for Benny, and also for me in the future. i dont think Benny knows. this promotion here didnt turn out to be fake like it did in the el cortez.

so with ALL THAT CASH on me, i sat down to play BJ, and thats probably not a good idea. was going to bet with the count, but i started getting stuck so quickly and fast doubling my bets up on extremely tiny running plus counts, (small enough where the bet shouldnt be raised in a shoe game) its certainly good cover though. quickly lost over $500 and the count had grown negative enough where i had to quit doubling and i didnt want to bet that high anymore til the count wasnt so bad.

so i started over with $5 bet, and by the time i left 2 hours later, i was only stuck $15. a very lucky recovery since i was too stuck and pissed to be betting with the count like i should. when i first sat and was betting high, the pit boss was watching closely, but he quickly left and paid no attention the first time i continued to bet high on negative counts.

u see, last night, when i won over $200, i was betting a little different. i was only raising the bet on the plus counts. now theyre fooled.

seems like the police too often go between reno and truckee in private sleeper cars transporting prisoners, i didnt realize this but i seen evidence of it today twice.

now one thing i really need badly is a haircut, but im trying to hold off til i find a place that also allows shaves, or at least trims the beard so it looks as good as a shave almost.

i definitely now think ill pay the extra for a sleeper car when i head out to denver or toledo really soon. its nice i have so much money i can do anything i want, try new things to make my life more fun and enjoyable, without worrying about ever going broke. and its nice to have a large enough roll to play higher stakes live BJ too. its nice to be able to afford a massage when i feel like it, travel in style and comfort, buy in for the right amount instead of just the minimum buyin, sleep in much nicer rooms with working wifi to do things online i cant do otherwise, and ive learned a lot from a guy on the local north lake tahoe city bus who is employed as the front desk clerk at a motel. seems instead of just 1 motel renting by the week, about 5-6 do, one of which he works at, and some also have a monthly rate that goes up or down depending on the season. i know now where a weekly is extremely close to the casino, and also the ones 2-5 miles up the road. some cost up to $300 a week, and ones a good deal for $220, some have better tenants than others, and some the wifi dont work and no fridge or microwave. and then some work fine and cost like $275 a week. but even in the middle of the night without a bus running, u could get anywhere on a bike. it would be a great place to stay longer term after the VBJ is fixed.

that is if the machine is beatable now that i play it a lot more correctly. im sure it is but for a much lesser amount than Benny says.

    1. The real truth of the matter is Tony. If more people lived out of their pocket like you and never had a credit card or loans the federal reserve wouldn't be able to take control of our economy like it has. Grinding sux, i understand this, and you know i do. VP and VBJ are not grinding. Anyhow i hope you enjoyed your message Monseigneur BigCharles! Did your masseuse look like your britini picture?

  12. Congrats on 10K Tony. Think about this though. I know once you reach an accomplishment and feel like you can breath a little you deserve to treat yourself to something. You don't choose a good meal or getting your tooth looked at. You start wasting money on stupid transportation costs. Is that really what you've wished for all this time up the ladder? Stop lighting money on fire on stupid stuff. Toledo sucks, nobody has any money there and the games are garbage. Why would you want to leave a place your doing the best you've done in a long time?

That's called good customer service, and has nothing to do with the fact that he was elderly or black.

Good to see you're up to $10k and now have a bit of financial flexibility - now don't do something stupid to screw it all up. WTF is your deal with machines and pit games? Are you totally incapable of learning, or taking good advice from those who know better than you??

And where the hell do you get off calling me an Islamic Terrorist on Twitter? Have you lost your f'cking mind?? In your deluded brain, anyone who doesn't kiss Israel's ass is an Islamic Terrorist?? Seriously, you have no clue how the real world works.

  15. Really disappointed with the last couple of blog posts. Great to see you get to 10k but really sad to see the way you are thinking. IMO should be trying to keep the expenses low and keep grinding at poker in Reno. THIS IS ACTUALLY WORKING. Was hoping you would make some small improvements to your life (teeth, phone etc) maybe start to take a shot or 2 at a higher level as your roll continues to grow. But no, instead it is VBJ, Table BJ (FFS) and expensive trips all over the place. What kind of pro poker player with your roll takes a $90 cab ride to play VBJ? Totally embarrasing. Sort it out!!

  16. Tony, first I want to congratulate you on reaching 10k. This is a great accomplishment and certainly a reason for you to be proud of yourself and to celebrate.

I'm still worried about some of the things you do, especially how you can rationalize so many things in your mind to make them good choices when they are clearly not. You are too often results oriented. As an extreme example, let's say someone offered you $1 for every time you pull the trigger playing Russian roulette. If you pull the trigger and survive, does the $1 reward indicate to you that you made the right choice? Just because the outcome was positive does not mean the risk was worth the reward, it just means you got lucky. The same is true when you straddle half your stack and catch a miracle, or keep betting big when the count is bad. Then you go ahead and rationalize this by saying you're fooling the pit boss. This defeats the whole purpose of even counting.

Your belief that you are now rich and free of financial worry is also troubling. Remember your hourly rate at the only game that you can prove that you beat (because it's the only game that you track) is about $15/hour. This is something to be proud of, but when you make purchases try to think of them in terms of hours you have to work to pay for them. That $35 massage cost you a little over 2 hours of work at the table. The sleeper car? 6 hours of poker to pay for that vs about an hour to pay for the normal seat. Straddling $55? That's gambling with money that takes you just under 4 hours to earn.

Sure, sometimes you have to treat yourself, sometimes you want to gamble a little, but please recognize these things for what they are, and recognize that $10k is a better place than you have been in a long time, but it's still not rich.

So go ahead, spoil yourself a little bit, but don't forget how hard that money was to get, and how easily it can disappear if you're not careful.

  17. For your phone service, take a look at ting (www.ting.com). I switched to Ting about a year ago and am very happy with the cost and service quality. It's a low cost phone service provider that uses the Sprint network. No contracts, low monthly fees based on your usage. Bring your own phone or buy one from them on their website. I pay $25-$35 per month for what I use. Pricing is based on minutes, texts and data usage. I don't use very much data - of course if you use wifi it doesn't count against your data usage. Sprint has pretty good nationwide coverage, but I don't think it's as good as AT&T or Verizon. You may want to check a sprint coverage map for Reno or wherever you plan to be. You may also want to check out Straight Talk through Walmart. I've never used it, but I have heard it's cheap. I would avoid long term contracts directly from the major carriers because you're locked into those for 2 years and their monthly subscription fees are higher so you're paying more for the phone over the life of the contract.

    1. the type of phone u suggest is the very type i dont want, and why im in bad shape with my cell now. (im using a company thats not well known, is soon going out of business, and runs off another companys network for a very low monthly price) and of course--no local stores. id never use the net to purchase a phone instead of a local store either. nor would i ever pay per usage instead of unlimited everything. i use an enormous amount of wifi and data on the phone compared to most people as im always online and using bandwith or whatever its called. im looking for something higher priced than i pay now for BOTH phone and my broadband laptop modem both. but its true i do not want any contracts either.

      Delete
    2. You're right, if you use a lot of data and can't use wifi most of the time then this type of plan wouldn't work for you.

      Delete
    3. If you're looking for the big shot deluxe plan, why not get a phone with a hotspot built in so you need not pay for a broadband modem + phone - both are included in one device and one bill. FWIW, I'm not quite sure how you use your phone so frequently! I maybe use about 1GB of data on my phone per month and tops 500 minutes - and that's on a business phone!

      Delete
    4. Tony doesn't understand that he can use a program like PDAnet with any android phone to tether to his laptop. Instead he'll effectively pay double by getting a separate laptop modem.

Fact is, he could do Republic Wireless for $150 up front for the phone and $25/month unlimited talk/text/data, and $15 one time for PDANet. That would solve all his needs.

  19. i just couldnt bring myself to fold KK preflop after id reraised a $12 EP raise to $28, and when he said $70, i committed myself for about $150 total. most people wont fold that preflop--and shouldnt.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I assume he had AA? I think you almost always have to be willing to get it all in with KK preflop with this amount of money in front of you. You need to be almost positive that he wouldn't play any hand but AA like this to fold here. For example if the only hands he could have is AA KK and QQ, this is essentially a coinflip and since there's already a bunch of money in the pot you need to get it all in. If you're not sure I think it's safe to assume he could have something besides AA. As your stacks get really deep (if you both have a lot more than $200) you may need to adjust this as the cost of being wrong is so much higher and the amount you have invested after a bet and a raise is a smaller percentage of your stack.
