One good decision

well for the first time in a long time, im finally doing something a lot of other people have recommended i do, that i never felt i had enough money to do. Which is to pay my rent upfront for a month (which ends up saving me about $160 a month). and since today was the first of the month, this was as good a month as any to do it.

I've always felt i didnt have the money to do so, but considering i lost $500+ the day before, and was thinking about making some bad decisions, i figured i better do it now before i end up NOT paying it and leaving reno, and being without a place to live again. now if i want to leave reno and go to lake tahoe, ill be coming back here and have my things stored safely, or if i take a short vacation of say a weeks time to visit Vegas, Grump, Lightning, PPP, or Josie. Also would like to find out WTF ever became of seattle irish. no one on this blogs heard from him since i left vegas.

the $160 approximately give or take i save paying upfront monthly is going to amount to a lot over the course of a year too. and speaking of missing out on something, all the hours i played in July were essentially for nothing. for theres no monthly freeroll this august at the beginning of the month like there usually is because of the tourny with Estafario at the end of the month that u have to win a drawing to get into. (the 100 with the most hours --im #1 in hours-- 19 of them will win a drawing aug 21-23 to get into the tourny with him, and all 20 of them will get at least $500 or more). But theres an 81% chance u wont get in, no matter how many hours u played.

so July just wasnt the right month to get a lot of hours in.

i passed the 344 hour mark, and im still at $15 per hour win rate, so i guess im not doing too bad. im just anxious to hurry up and get it over 500 hours as quickly as possible, without it ever dropping under $12. thats still a lot more per hour than most people with jobs earn per hour--most jobs are minimum wage of $7-8 an hour or less.

I dread the job i need to do of cleaning out this microwave too, and also of fixing a tooth ive held off due to the fear of intense pain.

i dont understand why this one guy on twitter said this---

@sevencard2003 congratulations on paying rent 1 time, something that everyone else in the world does every single month

about me paying my rent monthly. many people dont pay monthly at least not in vegas. many live with their family, friends, or spouse and pay close to nothing at all. many people get behind on their rent and never pay--im always seeing people in the process of being evicted at many of the low price places ive lived at. its really only those with plenty of money who do what Chris said. in vegas, theres at least 100,000 people living in weekly rental places, considering they have about 1000 units and theres at least 50 of them in vegas. all of them pay weekly instead of monthly.

and another bill im paying now is my phone, and also my internet. so there goes close to $100 more but not quite. still need better broadband, and then my bills will be over $100. Remember its been a while since i could play candy crush saga from home. what i want is a much nicer apt with wifi once im a few thousand better off. i feel like the post commenter named "dave" in the last issue of the blog gave a lot of good advice as to what all needs done as the roll grows before i start playing a little bit higher. that, and an apt with a lot nicer kitchen.

and im surprised i was able to deposit on Bovada a couple days ago. living in NV, im not supposed to be able to. has anyone else in NV or NJ or DE successfully deposited on Bovada once the ban went into effect?

But i dont think i deposited nearly enough to not have to worry about going broke, or to be able to play decent stakes. i dont like to lock up a lot of money and have it directly removed from my bankroll, but ive only got $53 there still after that deposit. 1% of my roll is really all i want to have tied up there to be safe. (even though the money there isnt part of the roll).

take a look at any room reservations site for reno or tahoe, u will be really shocked. only 6 out of 79 hotels have a vacancy at all on fri and sat this weekend, and the lowest price is way over $100, no matter how run down the motel. its a good reason for me to avoid going to tahoe to play the VBJ machine. (the only one thats beatable with a wide enough spread, because the ones in sparks are no good, with single points and a shuffle every hand).

so yeah im down to about $5300, but thats still not bad considering the bad year of late 2012 to early 2014. those were the worst 18 months ive had in many years, and most of u probably thought id not still be in action today.

i do a lot better on bluffs if done early in the session instead of late, and sometimes get away with floats too.

  1. Good job Tony. Chris Hudgins was simply stating we ALL pay rent monthly. The people who live in wekk-to-week accomodations are the minority and on the fringe of society. It may seem normal in your world, but it's not.

Tony, I hate dentists too and the associated pain that goes with them. However, dentists have gotten REALLY GOOD and the pain is barely anything nowadays. Any discomfort you may feel will be nothing compared to the pain the tooth has given you in the past, and certainly in the future. Just google some reviews on dentists in the Reno area, pick one and schedule an appointment. Wouldn't it feel great to not have to worry about your tooth anymore? Think of it as investing in yourself. Good luck.

  3. I'm happy to see you taking steps to make your life better. Don't worry about the twitter post, he is just being negative for no reason, you should be proud of yourself for doing things that will save/make you money - both on and off the table. I also don't like going to the dentist, but it's not so bad and you will be relieved once it's done. I hope you win the freeroll drawing.

  4. Tony, I noticed you asked a question about hotel rates in black hawk CO a few days ago on 2p2. I know you've thought about visiting there in the past, looks like you're considering it again? I used to live there and played many hours up there. Ameristar is where most of the action is, and also the nicest (and most expensive) place to stay. Poker rate last I was there was $79 but not available on weekends. All the hotels up there are busy on the weekends and consequently I don't think you can find a room under $100 on Friday or Saturday night. It is true that the games are good up there, but the rake is $7 ($5 house + $2 bbj) which cuts into your profit alot more than you might think, and winning a bad beat payout is very unlikely (quads beat with no room share). The place is also relatively remote (other than the casinos there is nothing up there, and it's an hour drive from Denver. It is a beautiful place and a fun place to play poker, but I'm not sure if it would suit your needs.

    1. Keep in mind that Blackhawk has spread limit poker - the maximum bet at any poker game is $100.

  5. Keep up the good work Tony. You are doing remarkably well. I doubt many people could make money long term playing poker. Perhaps you are one of them. Just stay focused and stay off those fucken machines!!!! Get you life back on track one step at a time. Paying for housing for the month is a good step.

Perhaps think about getting a second bank account and separating you gambling funds from your "savings" and life expenses. Make a budget to see how much it costs you to live each month and then try to win just a little more than that. Then you will really be saving and on you way to good things.

  6. im home now playing $5 DON sngs or small cash games PL08 on Bovada. im glad to now be in the $5400s instead of the $5300s. that game was so loose tonight. one lady lost over $2000, then came back 45 min later and started winning, and had spent over $100,000 earlier purchasing an antique car. huge car show in town jacking up prices. actually her husband was the one who bought it, and he was playing 5-10 which i heard was also loose. she called me with 56 offsuit to bust my QQ that i was allin for $138 preflop. but eventually i won a big pot with her gone. tripled up against the eldorado shift night floorman and the black guy everyone was calling eddie murphy. i wouldve loved to stayed much longer and went for broke if id only had the money to do so. that was a great game, and u could always depend on a straddle not less than $15.

  7. Tony why do you think your bluffs work early in a session? I think it's because you haven't given these players more free info than you'll ever get from 95% of players yet. Keep moving forward and stop talking so much at the table.

  8. How to clean your microwave;

    What You Need

    Materials
    1 lemon
Small microwave-safe bowl or measuring cup
Clean, dry dishtowel or cleaning rag

    Equipment
    Microwave
    Instructions

Pour water in the bowl: Measure about a half cup of water into the bowl.
Squeeze the lemon: Slice the lemon in half and squeeze the juice into the water. Drop the lemon halves into the bowl.
Microwave for 3 minutes: Place the bowl in the microwave. Microwave on high power for 3 minutes so the liquid comes to a boil.
Let stand for 5 minutes: Do not open the microwave door. The steam trapped inside will help loosen food gunk. Let stand for 5 minutes.
Wipe the microwave clean: Open the door and carefully remove the bowl with the lemons. If your microwave has a turntable, lift it out and wipe it clean. Wipe the inside of the microwave clean starting with the ceiling and the sides. Finish with the floor, sweeping any crumbs into your hand. Don't forget the door!
Cleaning stubborn spots: If you come across stubborn spots that won't easily wipe away, dip the corner of your dishtowel in the lemon-water and scrub until the spot comes away.

  9. home now eating and falling asleep. microwaves get food stuck to them easily and rather quickly after the first use. i just havent done anything about it yet. anyway im about to sleep. i was stuck over $330 once in the $1-2 NL and miraculously recovered it all back when several friends on twitter thought i should leave before i did get it back. then after many hours they finally started the $1-3 PLO game i thought would never go, but i was too tired by then cause id already been playing 10+ hours. and i should track PLO results, but havent as yet, cause i dont want them to mix up my results as a whole. im still $15 an hour at $1-2 NL after 360+ hours.

  10. so i sat with $111 of the $511 i left the $1-2 NL with (a $3 profit for the day). and i had that up to $356 and then the following hand took it all. thats the problem with PLO--u always lose the whole stack every pot u lose. and why u should sit with such a little percentage of the roll.

i had ajk2 double suited, and called $5 to go to see the flop. the guy whose a well known pro named Dustin F (no idea what the F stands for) who had a stack of $25 and $100 chips was raising alot and had just sat. anyway he makes it $30 and me and another guy call. its half plo8 and half plo hi and this is the plo high game. flop comes up ak5 with 2 diamonds, one of my flush draws. so i feel obligated to call his $100 bet, and im the only caller. i worry hes got a set, but no all he has is 69 clubs QT diamonds. he puts me allin on turn, and im still ahead but didnt know it. turn is 7 offsuit. river is 8 rainbow and he wins with his runner runner 69. for any plo readers i dont think i played it too bad, i was ahead all the way.

  11. Did you have the bigger diamond or did he? It makes a big difference in hand equity. If you have the bigger diamond, he only has the gutshot (and turned double gutter), so you're 89% on the flop and 85% on the turn to win the hand. If he has the bigger diamond, you are still the favorite on the flop, but only 60% to win, and on the turn you're only 55%.

Since you flopped two pair there are many less combinations of sets out there, so while a set is possible it's less likely.

  15. Tony:

Hey - hadn't been posting in a while, but I've kept up with your journey; I think you're doing some small things that could pay big for you, so well done to you, sir!

I think getting a monthly is a small step, but could pay big for you if it removes some of your stress abouit where you'll be living day-to-day and week-to-week. I think it's a positive step.

I also think Reno is a great town for you. Small enough that you can make friends a little easier, as you'll see those folks all the time. You seem to be keeping your temper in check, which will pay off for you long term.

    s.i.

p.s. - played a crazy 3 day stretch of poker last week! Ended up +$1,600.00 and ALMOST let my goofball buddy talk me into joining him at the 10/20 table. You've played with him - do you remember Timothy? He was one of my grad students. You played some 1/5 spread at O'sheas with us.

  16. It is nice to see you are doing well. I agree Reno is a really nice place and it allows for you to keep your bankroll growing. Reading your posts now I can tell you seem to have less stress going on. It also has to do with you winning and adding to the bankroll. I dislike dentists as well but the one I have now lets me take medications before I go in. In fact I start the night before and then add to that one at about 3AM and then add another at 7AM before I go in. At that point I don't care what they do. Keep up the good work.

  19. total cost of this trip is $7 plus whatever i might spend on hotel, or returning to reno

    ReplyDelete
  20. well the total cost of this trip went way up--$80 for my cab, and that was at a discount, montbleu had no game, lakeside had no game, just a tournament, harveys had a list and i didnt feel comfortable knowing theyre owned by harrahs. so i rode the cab to the tahoe biltmore. i couldnt earn comps for my play there or points, their card system was down so the only way to get a room was to pay $69 cash plus tax instead of $35 in comps. they said it might be back up and working by tomorrow. also found out i have $30 in free play coming, but it wouldnt let me pick it up and use it because the system was down, and then i lost about $75 on the machine. im retiring for a while. plus even out here, some bum walked up to me in the casino and asked if id loan him $5

  22. am now in bed, and the $800 i withdrew from the ATM plus $200 more is locked up at the casino cage. they took a while to figure out how because they said they only do it a few times a year. i ended up winning $80+ on the machine instead of losing $70+ so that helps. still dont recover expenses though, hope the card readers are working right by noon, so i can try and use comps and recover my hotel fee. and also pick up my free play i had.

  23. You stress endlessly over whether to spend $60 on a microwave oven. But $150 for cab and hotel so you can play stupid machines? THAT you'll decide in a heartbeat is A-OK.

  24. well the bad news is i lost back $185 on the VBJ this morning, after being up close to $300 once. but the good news is i found out id got a mailer sent to the wrong address i didnt know about for 2 free nights, so i just used that for last night and tonights room so i got the $80 refunded to my bank acct from my credit card. so ill still be at $5300. once the card readers get fixed i should have the comp dollars for 1-2 more nights and then be able to claim my $30 in free play. they're still not working right. ive earned 3700 points--those are working for the most part on the VBJ machine.

    ReplyDelete
  25. speaking of my vacation, im happy to report the card readers and comp/points are working fine now, i was able to pick up my $30 in free play, ended up winning about $200 on the VBJ a bit ago, bought some food, found out i have $49 in comps now instead of just $25 since its now showing up, so i used it to pay for wed nites room, new checkout date on thrus. this will enable me to be in town wed nite to check out the poker room $20 cab ride away at the hyatt in incline village, their poker room is open only wed thurs fri and sat. now if id been in carson city, i couldve went to the nugget poker room, but its way too far away. tues nite is the ONLY day they offer NL in carson city. up here they have $1-2 NL 4 nights a week starting on wed. not tonight, but tomorrow night.
