MY GOOD FRIEND VINCE

considering i have no credit, and unpaid past phone bills, id have a very difficult time getting a nice new phone without paying a fortune upfront, and to get on a good plan. so im lucky to have someone like Vince in my life.

we stopped at a Sprint store today, (his carrier) and talked to them about adding me to Vinces plan (and id have unlimited everything, and the fastest service)--and since i waited too long, ill have to change phone numbers. no way around that, and since my new phone will not be an android no way to transfer my contacts and poker records i dont think. but its supposedly a lot nicer and more powerful phone.

got it for $50 (worth $400+) and ill owe $75 a month for the monthly service, and $36 upfront to activate service. Bill will go to vince in his name, and ill be paying $75 to him every month, for a period of 24 months since they made him go with a contract since hes on a fairly new contract already now. at least he trusts me not to do him wrong, and we will pick up the phone in person Friday. they get it thru the warehouse and NOT the local store, or id have had to pay twice as much today.

so ill be giving Vince $161 friday, and then $75 a month for 24 months thereafter, and ill have much better quality of a phone, and much better quality service.

even if im not in vegas its still very easy to pay vince, since i just transfer my bank acct to his. we have the same bank. he's not been doing well at his job, and he would like to get back into dealing.

monday night, Vince and i played the stud tourny at the Plaza, i bought him in, and he got $20 and i got $40 when they chopped, 3 others were also in the chop, one of whom got $30 and one $40 besides me.

i shouldve held out for a lot more money, i was quite a bit in front, but dead tired, yes i definitely took the worst of that deal. a lot of gypsies were in it.

still not doing too well at live $1-2 NL, and have less than $70 on bovada after having a check of $700 sent to vinces house enroute fedex now, but at least im still a little over $11,300, and will have more once the bovada check comes.

of course, theres the big looming expenses friday of the phone and tooth expenses coming up too. and also im thinking of taking a 1-2 week vacation to a state none of u would ever expect that has no casinos where id be going. a complete nongambling vacation. to fly out saturday is like $300+ including luggage and theres a nice motel for $55 a night with great pics on craigslist if u commit to a week. there is also a transfer, its not a nonstop flight. takes about 8 hours to fly overall including wait time. It's one of the places ive always wanted to visit, not including siberia or israel.

Pretty much all of my wins have been at VBJ, the $1200 loss notwithstanding, im still way up at it overall. my host even commented as much and cant understand why. of course, i know why though. its because unlike 99999% of the players i know how to win. i may bet too much, but i know when the odds favor me, when they favor the house, and when to variate from basic strategy.

i've found a church where im planning to visit soon, and its right next to the sea (only less than a block off the ocean). nice quite peaceful place, close to God, and im also looking up dentists in that area now using the painless wand technology and ive found at least 2 and im sure a certain friend who grew up and knows the area intimately can help provide a recommendation in case my tooth goes bad while im on vacation. the other church id love to visit is about 50+ miles from the airport, but i can get there on public transit on the #10 bus.

and of course, i still play mom scrabble at times on facebook. was reading her post today on her wall describing Gods feelings on homosexuality. i just got done beating her by 20 points in a game she was ahead the entire way, when i scored a 7 letter word on the last hand, with the help of this site. http://www.solverscrabble.com/solver/

i also think Alysia Chang and vince should hook up, they both share a love for non holdem omaha and stud type games, and for skiing.

  1. theres also a certain tour that looks interesting, but it costs $169. it takes u to a famous highway with great sightseeing, a famous mining town where lunch is included, and gives u a great chance to see wildlife and take pictures. u get to see mountains and a wildlife conservation center.

    1. Sounds like Alaska? Let us know if your cheapo dental bill is really just a couple hundo or if the reality is that it will be over $1000. Dentists don't do that running away on the bill thing. If the bill is over $1000 and you can't prove you can pay that before the actual work they will not do the work.

  5. Tony you must be thinking about going to either Alaska or Hawaii if it involves about 8 hours travel including stop over time somewhere. At least I know you won't be going to Australia, as it is more than 14 hours of non stop flight, also you would need a document called a passport to get into a foreign country. Cardboard boxes cost more than $50 a night to rent in Australia, and the only Rapture we believe in or care about is getting laid.

I know I have told you I do not like to drive in the USA, but I am thinking about hiring a car for six nights from November 5 and driving down to Laughlin and then over into Arizona and having a look at different cities there like Pheonix, Flagstaff, Scottsdale, Tucson and a couple of other places. I would love to visit one of the old West ghost towns. Don't know if you would be interested in riding along with me and sharing the hire car expenses. But if you are, we can talk about it when I get to Las Vegas if you are still there.

The main reason I am doing this is even though I have confirmed reservations at The Gold Coast casino during that time, many online reviews seem to indicate that tthis is a very smokey casino which I probably won't be able to handle comfortably because part of my right lung was removed because of the cancer I had. Also one of the weird side effects of my chemo was that my left vocal cord is paralysed and I can only talk in a whisper. I will be having an operation in December which I hope will repair the damage done by the chemotherapy, but at the moment I talk like Marlon Brando did in the Godfather. Apart from that I feel really good and am looking forward to my upcoming trip, especailly my first four nights when I go to New Orleans.

Anyway take care, be careful playing the machines and hopefully I will see you in a couple of weeks.

You may not feel like it, but the effects from chemo could be a lot worse. A friend of mine has no nerve endings in his feet (from the chemo) so he has to hold onto a rail when going up or down stairs. From the radiation, many of his teeth were damaged (or fell out) and the gums are too weak for implants. That stuff is poison for sure.

  6. Tony,

Great post. I learned several new things:

    1. Gypsies really like to play Stud poker.

    2. If you take all of the people in the world who play VBJ, and added them up, you'd have more than 100% of VBJ players. In fact, you'd have 99999% of VBJ players.

What's Vince going to do when you are down to $500 and refuse to pay, stating that you didn't want a 24 month contract? Please don't cut off the only real lifeline you have. I would also check that unlimited is unlimited. Most carriers run a "fair use policy" meaning if you have the thing streaming videos all day long you will be hit for charges at some point, and you won't know when , because the bill and the updates go to Vince.

  11. I don't understand your phone decision. Virgin Mobile gives you unlimited minutes and unlimited text/data for $55 a month, and uses the same Sprint network that you'll be on, so same coverage. And no contract. You've been unhappy with every contract plan you've had, and breaking the contracts is what has gotten you into the fix you're in, where you can't go back with major carriers. Virgin is pay in advance month by month, so that's not an issue. And you can quit it any time you want, no penalty. It would help rebuild your credit, which a phone in Vince's name can't do. Over the course of 24 months, you would save $480. You could get a really nice phone, like the HTC Desire ($300), and still come out $180 ahead--and it's an Android phone, so all your data, apps, and contacts, would automatically get transferred over by Google, easy as pie. (No losing the hundreds of hours of poker logging you've done.)

So you're going to pay MORE every month for the same service, for a non-Android phone, and to be locked into a contract that you may decide you're not happy with long before it's over.

    This makes ZERO sense.

    1. is there a way to transfer info (or contacts) from my android to an iphone i dont know about? does google save it in my email address?

anyway Grumps plan wouldve involved paying a lot UPFRONT. i still think only this plan is truly unlimited, many have said with virgins unlimited the service is slow as fuck after u use up a lot of data.

all i have to pay upfront this way is $161 to vince on friday when we pick up the new phone, for the phone, activation, and first months service. he wouldve wanted the money yesterday i thought, but he said to wait til fri to pay him so we could play poker fri nite without him spending the money before then.

  12. Your vacation idea is a great idea but only that - an idea. I'll believe it when I see it! T-Mobile has a $30/month plan with 5 GB of LTE data and unlimited texts plus if you start using Google Voice + Hangouts you get unlimited talk. You can get a Nexus 5 for about $250-350. No contracts for the plan or the phone!

    1. What/where is this T-mobile plan? The least expensive I can find is $45/month.

Go down to where it says "$30 per month - ..." and 100 minutes talk, unlimited text, First 5 GB at up to 4G speeds (LTE, I've tested it)

"This plan is only available for devices purchased from
Wal-Mart or devices activated on T-Mobile.com"

Just activate the phone on T-Mobile.com and you're good to go!

      Delete
    3. The downshift after you burn up your 5 GB of 4G-LTE is not to a 3G speed. T-mobile has some awful gen2 level that runs at about 5-10 KB/sec when you use all of your fast minutes.

      Delete
    4. You are correct. I use wifi at home and have never used more than 5 GB LTE per month. But again, I am not on my phone all day (like TBC). Sprint has unlimited LTE plans for a higher price.

      Delete
  13. 1. Yes, of course there's more up-front cost with Virgin Mobile, because you're buying the phone all at once. With contract plans, you're spreading the cost out over 24 months. But the catch is that you're paying a lot more for it that way. You're paying $160 now, plus $75 per month for an additional 23 months, for a total of $1885. At VM, you could buy a $300 Android phone now, plus 24 months at $55/month, for a total of $1620. You could save even more if you get a less feature-laden Android phone than the HTC. AND you're not locked in to a 2-year contract if you find that you're unhappy with either the phone or the service. You've bitched and moaned about being stuck with deals you didn't like before, and here you go signing up for another one.

And, BTW, Sprint slows down data speeds for ALL heavy data users, not just those on VM.

    http://www.theverge.com/2014/5/8/5694878/sprint-will-throttle-speeds-for-heaviest-data-users

Finally, no, the iphone is not better than Androids. They're just different, and within the Androids you can find a wide range, from cheap, basic models to cutting edge super tricked out fancy expensive ones. But the really huge advantage of Android to you specifically is that you already have one, so as soon as Google recognizes that this new phone is yours, it will transfer all your apps, contacts, and data to the new phone automatically for you. If you switch to an iphone, you have to buy all new apps, enter all your data from scratch, etc. Huge pain in the neck.

    But do what you want.

  15. You can buy an I-phone 6 for $199 or $299 and Sprint has a plan for $50 unlimited for the Iphone 6, you would save $700 over the cost of the 2 year contract at $25 per month.

  20. anyway it was nice to meet Alysia Chang at the Venetian, wasnt sure at first it was her til i looked at the name on the bravo screen. i was stuck a lot from the V VBJ, and the $8-16 and the $1-2 NL. when i get a working phone again (my old one has no charger) i need to put down about 15 hours of $1-2 with $600 worth of losses into my records, making my hourly probably about $13.25. a wild guess.

anyway she encouraged me to sit in her omaha game, after earlier not sitting at my table.

a hand came up where i had a very powerful draw, board was one face card and 58 and i had a267. face card on turn, she bet, so i knew she was high. river came third unpaired face card. she bets, i know she isnt on the straight, so i raise, its my only option and the pots big, and i figure she wont expect me to bluff there. my hand looks like a low draw with an ace, and i could easily backed into the ace high broadway.

i said $16, but they wouldnt allow the raise since it was a $12 kill i wasnt paying full attention, and they forced me to call, so i was screwed, since i had nothing to call with. ill never know for sure if she had folded, but my reasoning wasnt too faulty.

that woman was down to less than $100 and came back to over $1400 in the next few hours.

  23. Okay Tony, I have zero interest in being known at a poker table. I would rather not draw attention to myself and stay pretty anonymous. Flying under the radar is kind of a big deal. In the $4/8 O8 game I have no issue. But please don't feel the need to engage in lengthy conversation with me and then when another player inquires about me, you tell them everything. It sort of destroys whatever kind of dynamic I'm trying to create to take their money. Definitely please do not do it in a NL game. Thank you.

    1. Benny, thats not why im thinking of returning to reno. it would fall thru, just like ur last promise to introduce me to a certain girl.

its mainly because my hourly is dropping since leaving reno. its now at $13 per hour after my last few sessions finally got logged as one long session of 17 hours with a loss of $760, which was about the amounts that hadnt got logged til i charged the old cell at the venetian today.

those were the combination of about 4 recent losing sessions, and my hourly wouldnt been so bad had omaha and plo8 been included.

but it looks like my hourly is negative in vegas, and i dont want to be dependent on VBJ for winnings, therefore i should leave town.

also the 1 vbj game in crystal bay, at least its pretty empty most of the time as long as the machine works and isnt out of service. unless the river palms has the machine nov 1 and they werent all removed, im not sure of another casino as empty of people on it.

    2. u see today i lost all 3 places in NL early in the day with cooldave at the v, lost again at southpoint with cooldave, and lost again when we returned to the V from southpoint. only won once i moved to $8-16 omaha 8.

the reason i won so much was all 1 big pot, of about $400, and the reason the pot was so big was how i played it.

u see i had a24k with the ace suited in diamonds. and i raised the kill preflop and had multiple callers. flop comes q93 with one diamond, but the pot is so huge i call a guys bet of $12 to take one off. then the black lady other end of table raises to $24 and im "pot committed to call again"

turn comes 5 of diamonds, so i have a total wrap wheel draw, and nut flush draw and any low draw. well theres 4 of us still in and i know im way more than 25% to win, so i decide to maximize my equity by raising the come against her top set, and of course she promptly reraises. so the pot is really huge since its a kill.

river comes ace, and she checks and i bet my wheel and scoop the pot and she gets really pissed i stayed in on the flop for her raise. i think my turn raise was beautiful and the idea to take one off worked so was it bad?

      Delete
    3. I'm not very experienced at Omaha, but the flop call seems questionable On the flop you're only 10% to win the high (probably worse because of all the other players) and need runner runner to win any part of the pot. I agree with your thinking on the turn, you have a monster draw so if you're getting called 4 ways with your raise that's a great investment. I wouldn't worry about what the lady said to you after the hand, she was just sad she lost the pot and blamed you because you won, as you know this is common at the poker table. When someone says I played badly I usually just keep quiet, or I may say something simple like "I got lucky" depending on how friendly I want to be. I wouldn't talk about my thought process because I don't think it's wise to do that at the poker table for many reasons.

      Delete
    4. if she has top set with no low draw and let's figure on average one diamond
you win the high with any a246 or non pairing diamond.you'll also win the low with an offsuit 7 or 8. as usual you don't say how many people are in the pot. so you have 6 clean outs to win the high and an extra 6 for the low.you also clearly have 0 fold equity. heads up your raise definitely has negative expectation. you said you have more than 25% equity so that in tony talk might mean it's 4 ways on the turn. if so your raise is fine.
of course the times you miss you come on here and whine about it, talking about "if only" you could have scooped that huge pot today.

    6. No sense in having a conversation with Hero about Omaha h/l. There's no point to it. I enjoy his table talk (to other players) because you can see their hackles rising and they tend to make mistakes because they become emotionally engaged instead of playing good poker. The whole table dynamic is more important than the antics of one player, even if that player is the world famous blogger, Tony Bigcharles. If he's going to tilt a bunch of players at my table by running his mouth and pissing them off, I'm good with it!

And as far as Mr. Bigcharles is concerned, if you pay a bit of attention, he has some flaws in his game and definitely has a bunch of tells. I won't state what they are but remember KGB in Rounders and the Oreo cookies? Yep, they're kind of like that.
