Delaware Park trip report

Lets start off by talking about a missing $200 im quite worried about. i have no idea what happened to it. i dont know if it happened down at Maryland live, (me having $800 in a shoe i took money out of and thinking i still had $1000 in the shoe) if 2 bills stuck together which seems to be happening often, or if i accidently paid the cabbie one in error thinking i was handing him ones. at first i thought i paid cash for my room here in Newark DE, because pricelines ad said book now and pay at hotel. but the front desk said i paid with a cc and so does my bank statement show that. but i left maryland live with what i thought was $1101 (and the $12,100 in the bank).

Paid nothing for the shuttle to the baltimore airport rail station, $70 for a train just for the short distance baltimore to wilmington thats normally much less, outrageous when all the way into NYC was only $110. ive been on amtrak trips much longer for far less.

the second i arrived in wilmington jumped in a cab right outside the train station (no uber here which i didnt know til it was too late) and paid $30. delaware park isnt anywhere near downtown. also had spent some money on food in the train station, etc, but still i shouldve had about $980 at least of what i left MD live with.

after a good long sleep, i woke up about 4.30 am and wanted to get to the delaware park poker room soon as possible for the graveyard promotion of 3 hours play between 3am to 9am being $100 in free slot dollars. was severely disappointed to learn i was told wrong earlier by a guy on twitter and that they couldnt be used for video poker machines after all. nor for VBJ, only for slots. however i ended up getting better than 100% running it thru on the slots later so it became a moot point. called multiple cabs, remember theres no quick fast service here since theres no Uber, there is of course rideshare on craigslist but ive never been comfortable using that, cause it has no screening whatsoever. at first i thought LYFT worked here but another google search shows this isnt a city they serve either. i didnt learn Uber didnt work here til i tried to bring it up on my phone and it says no service. so i finally got a cab to show up by offering $50 and then the guy on the phone who kept saying none were in the area and it would be well over an hour til one was suddenly was able to make it in 15 minutes. he said he would do it himself for $50. (its only 1-2 miles and normally a bit under $10). well 1-2 miles then an extra mile in circles around the grounds of de park up to the front door. which is why its so terrible far to walk it.

there is a train station right on the grounds of de park. the newark de to philly commuter services it. it runs a limited schedule but its a great option for folks on the train from PA. once u are on the grounds of DE park, the casino will pick u up in their shuttle, but their shuttle wont leave the property, but it will go to the bus and train stops on the property.

theres another shuttle service i learned of, its called delaware express. its running on Christmas but needs to be reserved ahead of time to be sure theres room, and its $94 to the philly airport or $131 elsewhere in philly such as the amtrak. theres not really ANYTHING running to the casino in Dover since the city bus isnt running which would get me there VERY cheaply if it was. no bus on christmas. the other casinos are too far with the exception of the one in chester PA 19 miles away (where there is Uber but not here) but thats still a big cab fee and they use the harrahs card so im not exactly wanting to go there. the one in perrysville MD is quite a bit further out like dover de, and sugarhouse i have no idea which card they use but its over 35 miles away. which means $100 cab fare.

so i should probably just take the day off and read moms book. theres not one friend in the area i know and trust to hang out and spend Christmas with except PPP and he is in NY. i dont want strangers that could turn out to not be safe. Joel and Vook are the opposite direction and have families.

i need to add money to bovada too, i lost my last $5 on there am down to less than $2 again after losing the sng i just lost.

most of the clientele of delaware park looks dressed like bums and quite poor. odd thing about this poker room they have BOTH $1-2 and $1-3 NL going at the same time. $60-300 buyin and $100-500 buyin both of which have the button straddle and do it the WRONG way that we dislike.

the inside of de park isnt any different its an old racetrack, huge in size in a very old building thats half empty but filled with machines and very poor carpeting. the old poker room is shut down and the new room is in the very back far from the front door. the 2 VBJ machines nearer to it suck because they shuffle every hand, though they do give comps and are $5 min.

the VBJ machines up front, (about 6 of them mostly empty) has 2 $5-100 ones and $3 $10 min ones and 1 $25-500 one. ive only played the $5. these are better machines since they do NOT shuffle every hand, but 2 3rds of a 6 deck shoe. im up about $500 on them since i came to DE park. u got to look closely the rules differ on them. some have surrender some dont. some stand on soft 17 some dont. so i always pray the 1 $5 machine with the best rules will be empty of people and if theres people they are on a different one. today the promotion made it worth playing. everyone getting 10 points got to pick an envelope for $40-500 in free play, and of course most all get $40, including me which i turned into $28 running it thru once. u get a point for every $150 played thru i think so thats $1500 play thru. so thats a great promotion that goes every wed. i put in about 2 hours play, made 14 points and left over $200 up.

delaware VBJ i think is like vegas. if the rules say shuffle 2 3rds of a 6 deck shoe, it cant be a lottery game theres no bingo diagram on it so its a fair game. no funny rules like PA has where each spot on the machine has its own shoe.

the fact im winning is the real proof its honest.

also i rode the city bus #5 back to my motel from the casino for the first time since no uber and getting a cab too hard, but that bus stops at 10.30pm and its still a long walk of about 3 blocks down a major highway at night. actually de park itself isnt more than a mile or so down a highway a different way but i hate walking it at night in winter. and that dont include the much longer walk once u reach the property itself unless u have their shuttle meet u by the commuter train and bus stop. Just like the inside of the casino its really HUGE. picture 10 foxwoods placed back to back.

ive made a LOT of bluffs in the last month. have succeeded in close to 50 of them. this makes me think i went a large portion of wasted years of my life not making nearly enough of them. i bought in the $1-2 NL game for $60, started losing $27 right off, then added $70 and was in for $130. after a couple hours i added another $100 for a total of $230. eventually i cashed out $742 hours later. and for the first time in a long time my win rate is back to $14 an hour from $12, (which of course means my rate in de and MD is much higher, and my rate in vegas much lower) its no wonder i dont ever want to go back to vegas. at least not for poker instead of VBJ.

the one hand i was going to mention was the 57 diamonds. flop comes 8JQ with 2 diamonds and i call $12 with one other guy and i remaining for the turn. turn comes 8 we both check. river comes 9 and he checks, i bet $45. he folds and i show the bluff.

u really need a bike around here to get back and forth to de park on graveyard hours when the really good promotion is going on and less people are playing and no one is on the VBJ. counting the hourly hi hand promos and the hours for the freeroll the promo might be worth as high as $50 an hour during those 3 hours. also the red roof inn is slightly less per day and very close to this hotel im paying $91 a day and its $45 plus tax if u know how to do it right. not as nice a hotel and outside entrances more unsafe but still.

$4500+ a month (in free slot dollars) is just too much to pass up. too bad i cant solve my long term housing and transportation issues to make this work. they seriously need uber and/or i need an apt on the busline. still im back to around $800 more than i was when i left vegas. which isnt bad considering ive spent a good $1500 or more now. for 2 days of play at DE park between VBJ and poker ive gained about $1000 minus hotel costs.

also the hotel clerk was missing for a good 15 minutes from the desk when i came to check in. had me quite worried at first but finally he showed up.

  1. When you leave Delaware why not finally come try Tampa Hard Rock. Its the busy time of year because all the snowbirds from up north come down here where its still 70+ degrees most days.

January 5th starts the gas card promo for 4 weeks straight. $100 shell gas card for each 25 hours played Monday thru Thrursday that week. So if you managed 50 hours that week Monday-Thursday then $200 or just 25 hours and get $100. Same for all 4 weeks.Plus high hand every half hour of $500 Friday-Sunday.

There is 2 hotels within half mile walk about $50/night 1 is right across from shell gas station where you can use the gas cards for food, snacks, drinks, etc.or sell them at the table for slight discount.

There is usually 8-12 tables of 1/2nl $60-$300 going along with 3/6 omaha 8 limit, 1-5 stud and sometimes 1/2plo and 2/5plo. Casino is 24/7.

This is definitely by far the easiest poker room to win at ive ever seen"

12/21: "never in my life have i seen a casino so easy to win at. im averaging $200-300 a day in the $1-2 NL"

So why have you left the softest, most profitable poker room ever?

  3. Tony if those notes were stuck together, I think you would have had to have had three stuck together to be missing $200. Now that the new $100 notes are in common circulation and they are colored, when I ws there, I tried to never have any of the old $100 notes on me, that way it is very hard to get them mixed up with the $1 notes. If you have any old $100 notes maybe you can change them at the casino cashiers before you leave.

It seems like you are spending a huge amount of money on your accomodation and travelling expenses. Hard to see where you can make some savings unless you are prepared to compromise on some living accomodation and standards.

Why don't you just put $50 on Bovada and stay away from a casino for a day or so. That would cut down on your travelling expenses and maybe you could find a hotel that is not so expensive.

Those vbj machines do not give you the spread you had at El Cortez, I am surprised that you think they are good. I think the fact you are winning with those odds is pure luck and nothing else. Be careful, just around the corner is a huge loss waiting to bite you in the ass if you go on tilt.

How on earth could any casino give away $4500 in free slot dollars to thousands of people every month and survive? Doesn't make sense to me. Be careful.

  5. Tony, use the DART bus system. Its $3.15 for a 24 hr pass. I dont think it runs 24/7 but if you plan it out you could save alot of money on cabs..

Also. Del park is nowhere near as big as foxwoods....you want to see the largest casino in North America?....head to OK to Winstar casino...it's about a mile walk from end to end.

  7. Let me see if I have this right. You refused to take off time from playing when you were extremely sick because this is how you earn your living and you can't take a day off from it.

So you leave the easiest room to win at poker you've ever found to go to a poker room that is CLOSED ON CHRISTMAS DAY. So you can't work now that you're feeling better.

    ???

But now I see on twitter that you took a $100 cab ride to get to a poker room that is open today.

Under the circumstances, you have to count that $100 cab ride as part of your buy-in when you figure out your win rate.

I do hope you have a nice Christmas, however you spend it.

All i know is i left wilmington newark area with a roll of $14,000 and now have a roll of $14,900+. so i covered my room, my cab and won close to $1000 besides. and i lost back $400 in the last 2 hours or id have left with a roll in the $15,000s. also i met a lot of new poker players who must of had something in common with me, for they spent their Christmas holiday at the poker table.

    ReplyDelete

    1. that was a wise investment, it returned back more more than the cab fare. no different than spending $50 in gas to go to work to make $400 at work.

    4. U've never been a self-made man. neither have most other people who comment on here. everyone has always depended on an employer instead of themselves to take pity on them and to offer them a job.

a self made man dont need someone else to offer him work. he creates his own job. whether that be thru gambling, or opening up a business or profession (like a doctors practice or what have u) he is the one doing the hiring and the firing, not the one thats being done to. its hard for someone to feel any respect towards u when u arent ur own man.

lots of business owners lose money on certain days. only those who are a slave to the man know how much money theyre limited to earning on any given day.

    5. comment above was directed to mr ben, i dont know why it didnt show up under HIS comment instead. anyway, sbr, i know that wasnt good positive expectation. i did think any games on christmas would be looser though, and thought it might be worth spending $50-100 overall expected loss maybe counting 2 cabs and a hotel just to have something to do on Christmas id not dislike

    6. I wish I had a roll to play - work with but I am not a self made man.. just a slave to the man with no respect... own 3 cars with no payments, a house with no mortgage and a condo with a small mortgage....I am only limited to my small salary so I guess I will never earn any respect out there in the real world!

  13. So, when you say that they do the type of button straddle that "We don't like" Are you actually speaking for anyone else, or just to the fact that YOU don't like it that way?

If I remember correctly, you don't like the standard button straddle because you don't like someone to your right doing it, and making you act first all the time? Because you are too cheap to straddle yourself...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. that isnt the standard way its done. its the way all the Harrahs places do it. most of the independent casinos not owned by harrahs do it the other way, (wynn, nugget, hardrock, atlantis, peppermill, venetian, to name a few). the Venetian at first did it the other way, but the manager realized it was unfair and people complained as much and they fixed it. it kills the action cause it forces the SB to fold and its not as big an advantage to the straddle either since he now dont get last action when someone raises. (he must call the raise BEFORE the blinds call the raise). the other way he gets true last action, for it skips over him and the sb and bb must first call any raise, THEN the button gets to act on the straddle.

its hard to understand why u or anyone would want the straddle done harrahs way. Rob is a great example of why its bad for the game.

      Delete
    2. Where I play most the time (Binion's) does it your way.... it is an unlimited amount too. I would like to hear more people chime in on this. I don't really straddle unless I am trying to set up a loose image, or loosen up a tight game... but I think both ways have merit.

Since you are much closer to being there than in the past (I think), I thought the warmer weather and possibly cheaper accomodation might be good for you both health wise and cost of living wise. i noticed theres nice apt nearby for $655 a month but of course i couldnt qualify. not even if i paid the entire year upfront (which i have enough in the bank to do). most people dont but yet i do, even though i worry about bills a lot more than most due to my situation. to qualify u need a tax statement and before this year i never think i made enough to worry about taxes and theres really no proof i made enough this year either. except my cell phone records and elcortez win loss statements.

  19. A tweet by Abercheese70 challenged Tony on his perspective and stated that Tony had almost 20k when he left Reno. Tony denied it stating that the most he ever had when he left reno was somewhere in the 9k range. For laughs I went back through some old posts, took some notes. At the beginning of Nov Tony had $19,363.00. On December 25 he reported a roll of $14,900 or a difference of about 4.4k. He's reported about 4.6k of expenses over those seven weeks. (there is no food added in because he never reports food). So he's just about where he would be if he never set foot in a casino. Ha.

    1. dont really understand what ur point is, its rare to always be at the highest of one roll. and not really possible. i never had more than $9800 in reno, the $19,000+ was in vegas not reno. my expenses were much lower in vegas, i had a months rent paid. im sure the vast majority of my expenses werent listed, but my bank statements show ive spent much much more than 4.6k in the last 7 weeks. more like $6000+ and thats not even counting the cash spent. but purchases made with debit cards, mostly hotels.

      Delete
    2. You know how everyone has told you should track, wins, losses, expenses. Here's why. There are tons of people who could help you interpret the data better than I, but here goes. That 6k you say you spent had to come from somewhere. 4.4k of it came straight from your roll. 19.3k -14.9k. That leaves 1.6k of expenses paid from what must be winnings. That is an average of $228 per week. Say you gamble 8 hours a day 7 days a week, that's 56 hours so your hourly rate is $4.08 per. hour. If you kept track of things like you should you would know whether you are living within in your means or not. I wasn't willing to spend time to dig through more than 7 weeks to do an estimate.

      Delete
    3. well we know the hourly is now back to $14+ per hour. thats tracked. we also know i spent more than $6000. we also know ive spent well over $1000 in cash thats not accounted for in bank statements. so anything else not accounted for would be either winnings or losses on games not tracked such as PLO, etc and ive got no idea if thats up or down overall.

      Delete
    4. Tony, taking money out of a cash machine is not an expense, paying for a hotel room is an expense, buying food is an expense. The hourly rate I calculated is across all forms of gambling. You don't track expenses so you will never really know what they are. I will tell you the same think I've told my kids and all my nieces and nephews. If you don't know where your money goes you will never have any.

      Delete
    5. I did screw up and say Reno, that was my fault, sorry for confusion.

  20. G'day Tony, believe it or not, I'm sitting here eating yesterdays left over potato salad for my lunch and I could not help thinking of you. Maybe you are right and Florida is not the best place for you at the moment. But I really think you are treading on dangerous ground playing vbj with a $15 min. Especially with your method of Martingaling your losses. It doesn't leave you many times to double up before you hit your table limit or blow your roll. That really has to be the worst vbj spread you have ever played. Can't possibly be good for you in the long run.

I think as long as you stay between $14,000 to $20,000 you will be OK, if you stick to poker. But if you have a blow up chasing a loss, you could be back down to $10,000 or even less very quickly, because I know you will hit the machines to try and get it back quickly. So please do not carry more than $1,000 on you at any time when you step inside a casino for the first time that day. At least if you blow that, it will give you time to calm down and think before you do something drastic. Take care.
