How to lower your monthly expenses

Pokerdogg (and others) are right. The main thing killing me since i left both vegas and reno is the outrageous per month costs on housing (for the most part). and to a lesser extent other transportation costs. Its not going to be easy to change that either here in Tampa. But its $1550+ a month in rent right now, and except for atlantic city, was that way for much of the east coast time in DE and MD. it would be far less in reno, vegas, and even deadwood if the $20-30 a nite was available long term.

would also be less in Laughlin, Evansville, Biloxi, Toledo, etc and many other places. i could even get it reduced here in Tampa if i could get a landlord to rent to me a normal apartment. My lifes been such a waste, so much of my life was lived in a motel instead of an apt. and i always gave up all the cheap apts that i ever had.

All of the bad decisions i make that cause big losses (wonder if pokerdogg would suggest i should cap losses at 1% of the roll each day or if $112 would be too small?-maybe 2%) are basically taking place when ive been playing way too many hours (shorter sessions definitely helps--was the biggest factor in renos obscenely hi win rate). its because im dead tired and dont feel like folding or playing poker any more and just want to get even so i can go.

staying at home and playing online would help to solve that too, but i first need to get the expenses cut down to where i feel like at $40 a day i could at least hold my own and not lose ground. Sure wish i had me a $300-400 a month apt somewhere now. i am living way beyond my means staying at this hotel, but im afraid if i stay anyway else ill feel too unsafe sleeping in the room. at least now the only place im feeling unsafe is on the bus back and forth. That too could be solved if i was winning so much (or lived close enough to make the fee low) to use Uber every day.

i was going to use Uber today to go to Derby lane instead of the hard rock, but  had to cancel that idea since Uber had surge pricing in effect today for 7.9x the normal rate. so i sure wasnt going to pay that. no idea for the reason. its the only casino ive still not visited, (not counting any offshore boats --not even sure if tampa has any--or the cardroom 35 miles away in sarasota FL not on public transit from tampa, only in their own city).

im just glad i still believe online poker (but only on Bovada) can still be beaten for maybe $40+ a day without a large amount needed to get started.

  1. Pokerdogg i just paid the $5 for the filters and im experimenting with them. Its showing only 135 hours of $1,3 NL and the other 1200+ hours was all $1,2. Im minus $4 an hour at $1,3 and $16 an hour at $1,2. Is that because im more comfortable at $1,2 or is it the small sample size of $1,3?

    1. Don't know, it could be either or both, with such a small sample size. However, I would tend to believe that you should be a winner at 1/3 based on your 1/2 results, unless you play dramatically different at 1/3.

  2. For md live alone a total of 70 hours play im at $36 profit per hour. Nothing comes close except extremely small sample sizes. Maybe i shoulve never moved on. Thats all $1,2 NL

    1. May be you should move back with Vince and grind at Hard Rock. Oh, that is assuming you can behave and don't get banned. If you do that, cut your monthly expenses to say $1200 a month. Play 160 hours a month, average say $15/hr, you can grow your roll by 1200 a month. This a low risk and easy to do, and you can spend some money to fix your teeth. With all the free time left over working less than 40 hours a week, you can pursue other interests, meet some nice woman, etc etc.

Think about it, what you do right now isn't working very well.

  5. Amazing that Tony's focus is on the fluctuations of his hourly play when he wastes thousands on travel, rooms, martingaling.

Amazing that Pokerdogg and others continue to give advice, knowing it will never be followed.

Amazing that I spend the time to write this, knowing that little I have ever said or will continue to say or write will ever have much of an effect.

I don't know what you are talking about. I made those bankroll calculations about 5 years ago. Made reference to and/or posted excerpts in Tony's blog about half a dozen times over the years. Finally, after 5 years, not only did Tony acknowledged my post, we actually had meaningful discussions about this.

This is progress folks. Repetition works!

    2. Pokerdogg, you are correct in that Tony somehow seemed to turn the corner on computing his win rate. Actually, as I recall, he seemed to jump on it fairly recently after PPP mentioned it in blog comments. And yes, that is certainly a step in the right direction.

However, I was referring to the other things you mentioned in your comment. I have likened change in Tony as being akin to drilling through rock with water one drip at a time. Avoiding bans, not wasting money traveling from one place to another looking for the perfect situation, taking care of his rooming in an honest way and not skipping out on money owed or on contracts/agreements, getting his tooth pulled, pursuing non-prostitutes in looking for relationships ...

Despite my recent post about Tony's hygiene, from everything I read, he has actually improved in that area also. So yes, there is hope. However, Tony's resistance to change despite so many offers of assistance tends to frustrate even his most ardent supporters.

I hope Tony does not take five years to come around to getting his tooth pulled. He had the perfect opportunity to get it done in Las Vegas via his own doing and also via Alysia Chang, and could have easily gotten it done in Baltimore via The Poker Meister's efforts. Several of us fear that this will be the defining issue in the TBC story.

    3. I think it speaks well of folks on this board that they continue to try to help Tony, despite the obvious hurdles.

There are good people in this world.

    4. Hi lightning36, Tony actually tried to keep records with another phone app a couple of years ago, it didn't last very long, and people have been telling him to keep track for years before that.

Drilling through rock with water drip is a very good analogy. I think everyone knows there is no lack of things Tony can/need to work on, but most people who tried to help him, underestimate the amount of effort and the time it would take for change to happen. People spends a lot of effort (relatively speaking for some stranger on the internet), gets frustrated, and then gives up. My expectations are a lot lower. A little bit of advice now and then, and just keep repeating the message. If I don't push so hard, I won't get so tired and frustrated.

As far as his teeth are concerned, either he gets it taken care of soon, or it will take care of him. Either way I don't think it will take four more years (since he's already dragged it on for a year).

  6. What's the definition of insanity again? Oh right, doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results...it doesn't matter how many meals you buy him, how many rides you offer; Tony's gonna Tony. Short of actually hiring a female assistant that kisses on the lips and drives and cleans and can give a decent straight razor shave and haircuts that has no male friends or family that is also a God fearing Christian, things will continue as they have.

    1. So... you're saying there's a chance?

    2. Let me point out another example. For as long as I have been following Tony's blog (2008?), I have advised him to track his results, as had many others. After almost six years, he is tracking SOME of his results, and wait, there is more. He just spent $4.99 to upgrade his app so that he can filter his results.

See the pattern here? Change is possible folks, and good job all you folks that keep fighting the good fight, despite the odds!

      Delete
    3. So.....Tony is terrified when riding the bus. But he lets a total stranger put a straight razor to his neck once in a while?

      Weird.

    4. If it ain't (perceived by TBC) broke, don't try to fix it. After reading "Wheat Belly" and "Grain Brain" and a book on people on the autism spectrum, several issues come to the forefront:

      - Tony eats way too many carbohydrates such as potatoes. His possible diabetes that he suspects he has could have a connection to that. He needs to cut back if not eliminate potatoes entirely in his diet. No wheat products either.

      - Tony needs to eat more cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower. Also tomatoes for the lycoprene. Cancers of the prostate, colon and etc. are on the horizon.

      - Tony should learn to meditate and find stress relief in hobbies or community service because I am sure his blood pressure is ridiculously high from the daily stressors that fill his day.

      - A return to God and regular church attendance. He has been neglecting his spiritual health for almost as long as his physical. Plus being around caring, loving people who want to help him back on the road to God might break the current cycle and renew his faith in his fellow man.

    1. would be pretty ignorant to think more people would need rides just because the superbowl is on TV, would it not? a big festival with 500,000 people in tampa at a parade, now that might do it.

    2. Um, you do realiz a lot of people go to parties and bars to watch the game and don't want to drive, don't you. It's one of the biggest drinking nights of the year.

    3. Tony: if you are still around Tampa come this fall there is a massive party called Guavaween that is held in the Cuban part of town called Ybor City. I went to one on the late 80s that a quarter of a million people attended. The might be a 500,000 person event nowadays.

    4. No. It would be ignorant to think the SuperBowl would have no affect on Uber demand compared to a non SuperBowl Sunday.

  8. Tony, I forgot to mention earlier.

I have always thought that the name calling, the harassment, etc. that I endured as a kid was due to racism. Now thanks to your tweet, I understand that Asians are not people, and therefore it was not racism but speciesism that I suffered. Thanks for revealing THE TRUTH.

    1. u of all people (because of ur son) should know that people with aspergers dont know how to communicate properly. well i used the wrong word (real people) because i didnt know what word to use to refer to people who werent foreign born, or whose family is foreign born. People who are native to america and have no ties or allegiances to any other countries. it wasnt the best choice, but twitter only gives 140 characters.

      Delete
    2. Did you mean to say "immigrant" instead of "real people"? You could have saved 2 characters if you used the better choice.

I, of all people, know that my son would never say something like what you tweeted below:

Tony tweeted... "Really nice to play in a pokeroom that hires real people for dealing jobs whites mexicans blacks instead of 90% asian. No racism here"

Are you saying that whites, Mexicans, and blacks can't be immigrants or have allegiances to any other countries, but all Asians are immigrants and have allegiances to other countries? What conclusions should we draw from such a statement?

Doesn't this statement go directly against what you have been saying about your own president?

Use as many words as you like here, I am really curious to find out what you really think.

  10. Surge pricing was probably due to the Superbowl. You are the only person on earth that could possibly spend his entire life in a casino, yet not know the super bowl is going on.

    ReplyDelete

    1. It was due to something local called gasparilla and im not sure what that is but its some big event

    2. Reading about it now. Some kind of pirate festival with over 500,000 people. Thats far more than were at the siperbowl

  12. well i finally got Vince sent the $80 i owed him the past few days--but i still got to pay for a pan, dishsoap, a water pitcher, and a microwave container. i never pass a store selling these except when im on the bus and often theyre closed up at night or i dont want to get off and wait forever for another bus, nor do i think the casino here would allow me to carry those items inside like they would in vegas. wish there was one within walking distance of me. Plus tomorrow rents due again, so then ill be at a new low of under $11k. number one priority is to figure out how to reduce expenses in half without leaving tampa.

    2. as ive stated 100s of times anything ill rent will not be a room in someone elses house. it needs to be a motel or apt. something private not around other people. lots of things made that ad unsuitable including the fact ud need more than 1 bus instead of just 1.

  14. tonight i again wasted money on Uber instead of just taking the bus to the hardrock. the reason for this being i needed to stop at the Big lots on the way and pick up a microwave dish, dishsoap, a pan, and a water pitcher. it certainly wasnt the cheapest way to handle this, but was by far the fastest and most convenient. so i ended up at Tampa bay downs instead of the hardrock. The neighborhood on the main hiway to there is so much more luxurious and nice than near the hardrock and so many luxurious apt communities i wish i could afford. Turned out to be a good decision, as i hit a hi hand and it held up. made it home with about $180 profit, not counting Uber fares and money spent at the store.
