Huge problem that just came up.

As anyone that very closely follows my twitter feed might know, the bank told me Friday afternoon they had to close my debit card, and reissue me another one, by mail, (for my "protection") which is the biggest crock of shit, its for the BANKS protection, because they are the ones liable instead of me if anyone misuses this account. i'm only liable for $50--and this hassle is going to be costing me way more than that. especially if i have to fly back to vegas to pick up the new card from Vince in person, and he told me on the phone he will be watching for it carefully all week, for they claim it will be there within 7 days. i didnt think about rush delivery, but now this morning, i wonder if that wouldve been an option and if i shouldve suggested it? id have been willing to pay.

i dont have any type of address in AC to get mail, although i suppose i might have vince rush it to me overnight delivery at my hotel whereever ill be once it arrives.

u can see from twitter, Vook and Nick dont really understand. vook thinks i should be happy im being put thru all this hassle instead of the 1 in a million chance someone mightve fraudently charged my card and id been out $50. hes never been on the road without an address with only ONE type of debit card to his name. (wish id never thrown out my old dormat walmart and greendot cards). not sure if they were reactivatable by making a deposit, but i couldve tried. at least they had my name on it. i dont think theres any place in atlantic city to buy one with my name on it without waiting to have it come by mail or id do it.

Nick blames me for not telling the bank im out of town, and thats never been a problem, and of course i verified all the charges on the card were made by me, and so they couldve re-opened the card had they wanted. but they claimed it had been compromised and i wasnt the only one who had to deal with reissuance.

i dont really believe them, im sure its due to depositing on Bovada, or from the $100+ worth of bitcoin recently purchased. for every time i do something like that, it seems thats what always causes this to happen. this isnt the first time the banks forced me to get a new card. worry about how this will affect my Bovada withdrawals too.

im considering pay a ton of money to stay outside the casinos at a place id really not prefer to stay that costs too much just to not need a card and pay cash deposit. i dont know of any casinos outside NV that allow cash deposits, and only 2 in vegas. even the el cortez wont take cash deposits. if i did this, id stay for like 2 weeks til Vince can get me a new card overnite delivery to AC once he gets it within a week. hopefully they mailed it out yesterday.

im worried when i go to the Taj to check in sunday they wont take my new temp debit card the bank gave me without my name (says valued customer). the manager at the tropicana i explained the situation and she took it, at least i think that was the main manager, hopefully she didnt violate the rules when she took me. im not really sure which employee she talked to in the back. it might be easiest to cancel my sun-mon res at the Taj and my wed-thurs res there just to be safe, but that will cost me about $300 more, if i just stayed here all week instead. (not counting next fri and sat free rooms).

i dont need all the stress, this will affect me greatly emotionally a lot more than most people. id just as soon pay a round trip to vegas and back to avoid stressing, or never moving hotels until i get my new card in my name. (to avoid worrying not being allowed to check in). all i know is this is much more hassle than worrying about fraud charges.

from now on, as soon as i can, ill always have 2 debit cards, so ill never deal with this again the next time im cut off. another way to get a 2nd card is like with paypal, or tons of other companies. at least i dont have to show one in my name to board a flight, just ID. this new temp card will pay for things online, its just im afraid to if when i go to check in ill need more.

is there any hotels u can pay online using paypal and which website does that? and then a cash deposit in person? ones in this part of the country. doesnt have to be in AC, but at least close enough to travel to, such as Philly, newark DE, baltimore, etc. i also emailed a few hotels to ask about this in this area.

other than that, things are ok, im still over $24,200. my mother isnt feeling all that great after surgery and cant be online much for a while. with her hand the way it is.

anyone have ideas of ways to get a debit card with my name immediately or hotels that take cash? (that are safe to live at i mean)

  1. You should check the liability policies of your bank. You are making assumptions about fraud liability on your debit card that may not be correct.

    1. well, still the most id be out is $500. but id always report within 2 days i scour my bank statement 1-2 times daily. its downloaded on my cell too. also it wouldnt cause the hardship to me it would cause to many because only about 1 person out of 20 keeps a balance of $20k or more at all times like i do. thats why the lady in the bank yesterday tried to sign up for a credit card for me and then was surprised i was declined since i had a 10+ year good history with a large balance and then decided to do the secure card credit option for $300 with the $39 yearly fee. she said to put all charges on it, then immediately pay by transferring the payment from my checking, and told me this will help me estabilish a good credit rating within a year.

    3. Tony - I know this will fall on deaf ears, so I don't know why I'm writing it, but in the 0.01% chance it doesn't: bad idea to get any sort of credit card for someone in your situation. The possibilities are pretty bad for you and credit - more bad than good can come. Moreover, without a permanent address, there's a lot of mail that would go unanswered. Beware of credit cards (secured or unsecured)!

  2. Can't you ask the bank to send the new card to a branch close to you for pick up? Tell them the truth, you are traveling and have no idea when you will be back in Vegas.

so far, this debit card problem has only cost me about $350. but not moving rooms with lousy net u gotta pay for and staying in one place elsewhere for a week til this is resolved, is a small price for peace of mind and less hassle.

  9. Simple, Simple and Simple, just explain to Hotels that your card is being mailed to you and you have replacement card, have Vince send you new card in the mail or Federal Express, etc at whatever hotel you are staying, all hotels except mail sent to you. All the stress is as usual, unnecessary, and you don't even stress about what is important or urgent. The truth is this happens frequently and the hotel staff will likely understand your situation and accept your unnamed card.

Nothing you described is earth-shattering, dangerous to you, or even more than a minor annoyance, and you turn it into a terrific disaster.

Also, the VAST MAJORITY of hotels, including Las Vegas Casinos, take cash deposits and cash payments for hotel rooms. Each hotel is different. Remember, many people don't have credit or debit cards and pay everything in cash.

    1. As usual for a condescending comment by a reader of Tony's blog giving him no credit for any real world knowledge whatsoever, this is completely wrong. You have clearly never had to live out of hotels or out of the mainstream system of the status quo. The truth is that banks really do cause undue convenience to their customers to protect the bank's own bottom line, and you really do need some kind of plastic to get by in this world. It is very rare for a hotel ro accept a cash deposit.

      Delete
    2. I can name 4000 hotels right off the top of my head in an instant that take cash deposits without much thought---that is hardly rare, and that is one hotel chain only. Apparently you don't travel much.

      Delete
    3. And..who said anything about banks not causing undue INCONVENIENCE to their customers, I just said Tony made a simple solution sound like a disaster. Uh, I have traveled all over the World business and pleasure, travel all over the US playing poker, I kinda know how hotels work.

As I said, easy peasy, Tony explains situation like a human being, Tony has Vince send him card by Fed Ex, minor inconvenience settled without a problem or sleeping in the bathroom stall.

    4. I don't use cards much, every hotel I've ever stayed in allowed a cash deposit. I will tell you that if they aren't going to allow a cash deposit, they probably aren't going to take a prepaid card either. And yes, the banks are going to cover themselves from liability, that is common sense.

      Delete
    5. The majority of Vegas hotels take a cash deposit.

    6. Maybe we should ask your idol "Game Cat" ...Just what would Chris Ferguson do in this dilemma?

    7. If the prepaid VISA has a $3000 balance that the hotel can put a hold on I dont think the hotel will care that is sez walmartmoneycard on it. Try using a real VISA card almost at its limit after your standard room charges are figured in. If there is only $49 or so available limit left for the room deposit you will likely be sleeping someplace else that night.

    8. There is no dilemma, JD. Now that Tony has a certain level of financial security he has to find other things to panic about. According to Chris Ferguson, gambling addicts are frequently adrenaline junkies who, when getting an insufficient buzz from gambling action, tend to jump from one self-created crisis to the next. As such they travel a lot, develop bizarre fears and rituals, blame others for problems perceived or imaginary, and are doomed to be permanently miserable.

      Delete
    9. There's truth to that but I disagree about permanently miserable. Your underestimating Jesus Christ!!!!

LOL You only got your balance up to that amount not too long ago. It'll be back down below $15000 fairly soon as usual. I think it's more like 1 person out of 20 does not have a balance of $20000 at all times in various accounts. What are you going to use when you are too old to gambool? If I was in your current situation, I would search for a furnished apt, on a bus route to a casino, and where Uber services, and negotiate a 3-6 month lease. You may not find one right away, but you should ask around and read the classifieds in the local paper daily until you do.

I know you just got stuck without a debit card, and I hope that is sorted out now. So it doesn't happen to you again, can I suggest that you take about $8,000 of that and open a separate account in another bank, and get a debit card for that account as well. That way you will have two debit cards.

You don't even have to use it, but it is there if you need it. Every now and then just add a couple of hundred to it and never withdraw from it except in an emergency. Use your other account as your working account and let this one build up to become your "nest egg."

  24. I know I'm waaaay late to this discussion, but Tony, CREDIT card and DEBIT cards are entirely different. Debit is tied to your checking account, and anyone who gets your debit card and PIN can clean out your checking account before you know it. I think you're liable for ALL of it since it's difficult to prove to bank security what your balance was. Your loss is limited to $50 only on a CREDIT card.

I only use a credit card for online purchases like Amazon, for this reason...NEVER a debit card. I use debit for gasoline and groceries.

And I never have done any online banking on my phone. Anyone can steal your cell info and passwords on an open Wifi network, which you use all the time in casinos, right? Protect yourself!

    1. No, the part you mentioned about BANK debit cards is not true. They have fixed up many of the differences in liability between debit and credit cards. Under Reg E. If you notify your bank in writing within two days of a fraud you are limited to $50, and after 2 days but within 60 days you are liable up to $500. Credit Cards fall under Reg Z and have a longer reporting period. It is better to use a credit card instead of debit since it is easier to fight when you haven't paid your credit card bill than when money had already been taken out of your bank account.

    3. Paying your debt will mark it on your credit report as settled. It will have an effect on your credit score, and in a couple of years your credit score will definitely be much better.

Aside from your credit score, shouldn't you be paying your bills regardless? Now that you have $25k, there is no excuse not to pay your phone bill.

    4. You should never pay a bad debt or collection off without getting a delete letter from the creditor in advance of payment. This will require the debt to be removed or deleted from your credit after payment. Paying a collection off will in most cases will hurt your credit score. Paying it and having it deleted should drastically increase your score. Not that I think Tony would actually do any of this.
