the life of a poker player

well i've never stayed in the NORTH tower of the tropicana before. i was so tired when i busted out of the Borgata tourny, i grabbed my bags from the bell desk, and instead of waiting for the jitney i got right in a cab for $13 (everywheres $13 here) (and uber is outrageusly overpriced too compared to other cities) to cut off 30 or more minutes time. i hadnt ate since i woke up in my free room at harrahs (which i'd earned thru 4 hours play some days earlier), and i was originally going to take the jitney to the trop to check my bags in, then play some poker. but the jitney happened to be the one ONLY going as far as borgata, then the convention center/train station. wasnt going to trop or taj. so instead i took it to borgata, checked the bags, and decided id go later.

there was no seat open, so i decided to sit in the $200 tourny since there were lots of players. total ended up being 222. late reg was like 3 hours in. 35,000 chips starting with blinds of 25-50. deep stacked, slow structure no turbo. but i never got off the ground. i think i did well to make it to 65th place, i outlasted 2'3rds of the field.

the guy claimed the south tower was full, went to put me in the west tower (long walk) much worse wifi, if u ever go to the trop, south tower is by far the best. so i offered him $5 tip and he got me into the north tower and waived the fee. (not the tip, some other fee). earlier in the tourny nobody was getting tipped, certainly not the waitress with the nasty attitude who was bringing the water. i wasnt about to break the $500 chip and the 3 $25 chips in my pocket to tip which id got when i left the live BJ table there before the tourny up close to $40. i did remember to cash them in the poker room before the tourney ended though. Been long time since i wasted the fee for a cab in ac too.

would like to talk a little bit about what the life of a professional poker player is like. not the life of those with money playing higher stakes or daily tourneys (where u need a much bigger bankroll than those of us much more numerous who stick with cash games) but those working much harder than most others do, struggling to get $75-150 per day to survive. (over a long average. of course some days much worse or much better). its sure not easy. my life of the last 25 yrs is proof of this. without cutting every dime of my expenses, doing without a car, a good woman, and without ever buying nice clothes or jewelry, is how i avoided (and climbed out of poverty). yes im still poor in the sense i worry about paying for food, shelter, and medical care. but im not dependent on the govt, and normally keep 6-12 months expenses in my checking acct. very few of my readers can say this. many are totally dependent on their paycheck, or govt check.

and my closest friends are worried about my health, and keep asking me about it. well im mixed up mentally ive got a block on spending money--even if its killing me. plus i fear needles or pain. hey i did spend $182 this week on a drs visit and medication--and i sure hope this money wasnt wasted. i feel better today but still using the antibiotic and nasal spray. i wonder if it wouldve cleared up on its own though--why im wondering if it was wasted.

id already decided to return home in before 5am this wed march 9 for my dental appt. but i didnt tell ray, and he canceled it because he was worried theyd bill me since they said if i missed they would, but legally they cant, theres no proof legally i was behind ray setting it up. this was the one with the oral surgeon who wouldve removed it for $600+ but id still need them cleaned which oral surgeons dont do. now hes made me another appt, but its not what i need, its in the end of april and i need something much sooner, needs to be in this area, or maybe louisiana where ill have to go. i did check with a local dentist specializing in putting folks to sleep first, waiting for them to get back with me via email. i wish to be put to sleep for the cleaning too, im told some dentists will do this, its just a little expensive. i want multiple work done while im under, not just one tooth. id like all the holes fixed while im sleeping. so it will cost more. but over $2000? unlikely.

so basically what i need is for others to find this type of dentist, most dont offer iv sedation, only other types. most who do are oral surgeons, not dentists, so they dont clean them. tell where in the country id need to travel to get this done, and ill fly there. its too hard to find online when only 5 out of 50,000 dentists do it. im too tense to even get them cleaned which is the major thing needing done first--without being knocked out.

this is very common for autistic people--just search online. same for other disabilities it says.

yes poker players see money quite differently. its our lifes blood. without it we cant survive. no wonder we are afraid to use it for anything but gambling, for we equate spending it with physical death and forever homelessness. ive seen too many go broke always bumming money continously for a stake. im going down too, out over $170 today. woke up with $1 less than $16,400 now just barely over $16,200. been quite lucky on live BJ lately--its where over $700 of the money came from. shouldnt entered the tourney but i wanted to try something new. and i guarantee u the vast majority of the poker players even the tourney ONLY ones, including those who its their only income (no cash) dont have the 100 buyins u need. many probably got less than 10. this is why ill never trust any other poker players and worry about being setup and robbed or ever be able to invite girls to my room. im too big of a target due to my vast bank acct. no one comes close to the freedom in life i have to just disappear and be across the country in 12 hours without a boss.

i dont think i did bad for not getting any cards.

  1. i didnt list my bustout hand because i didnt think i played it well, but i had just paid the BB and was the SB with 9 BB left. i had QJ offsuit and was planning to shove B vs B. instead the button made a small raise which he did fairly often so it didnt mean much. but i didnt have enough to get a fold, and he calls with AJ i busted. shouldve folded. but im so used to shoving with any 2 in this situation in the don sngs.

    3. If button made a small raise, say 2.5 to 3x BB, wouldn't 9BB be the perfect stack for a stop and go?

    4. I can't believe I'm going to say this, but...I agree with Tony on this one. With 9BBs, either push all-in or fold.

  2. Just google sedation dentistry or relaxation dentistry and include where you want to be. I will not waste my time looking for some dentist you will never follow through with.

I am glad that you enjoy the lifestyle you have chosen. I am not sure that I would give up my relationships, my health, my medical and dental insurance, owning my home, taking a paid vacation, and retiring with sufficient funds for the rest of my life, for the freedom you describe.

    1. those links really wont tell u enough. for instance, most sedation dentists only do non IV forms of sedation--the sedation is referring u to their oral surgeon. getting the teeth cleaned while under IV sedation is next to impossible to find via google without 500 or more hours of research.

    2. Ad IV to the search and a locations should cut your search time to around 5 minutes. "Sedation Dentistry IV New York". Here is one to start you out http://smileinthecity.com/iv-sedation

  3. will look, but this might not apply to a simple cleaning. also most of these nice dentists might bring the price up to about 2-5x the cost i paid in reno, putting it way out of my league. most cities will work, but not NYC, no casino there. checking out the ad now.

    1. i did look, it lists all of their services, and tooth extractions or cleanings arent even mentioned. only heavy duty dental work, not the common stuff. its hard to find one who will do it for the more minor jobs.

    2. Stop wasting everyone's time. Just go back to one of the ones you have seen before.

    3. Tony, you spend a ridiculous amount of money on hotels and travel for a low stake cash game player. I would be surprised if there is anyone else in the world who spent more than you on those two things.

    4. the one i used in reno was NOT a dentist. hes an oral surgeon, he doesnt do cleanings. its like a 2 month wait also. some dentists offer emergency work.

    5. Interesting, I have never heard of general anesthesia used for teeth cleaning. Seems like it borderline on malpractice, how can the dentist justify the risk in teeth cleaning?

    6. theres no risk if the dentist is well schooled

  4. www.thurmdental.com has an office in Linwood which is 9 miles from the Trop. Also you should volunteer your time at a homeless shelter to do something productive. You act as if you have so much "freedom" but you are imprisoned in your own impulsivity and addiction. If you were really focused on making money you would setup shop at Parx which has a popular poker room separated from the casino. Yes you may have to pay a little more for a room (try booking on Hotwire) than the "free" ones in AC but if you play well you should be able to win $200 to $300 a day.

    1. Parx has a really good poker room. It's big and has good action. Last time I was there the casino did not have a hotel.

    2. this is the dental office im waiting to hear back from they dont want to give me a price without paying a $300 fee first for an in person examination. im afraid it might be $3000+ instead of $1000+ no point in shelling out $300 just to be told its too high. ill gladly pay the $1000-2000 if i can get both the cleaning and the bad one taken out. im just afraid of wasting $300. why does every other office quote prices but dentists? no reason to spend $60-70 a day for the hotel across from parx when the $1-2 game here just as good.

  5. I believe the term you are looking for is "gambling addiction". Holy cow Tony, I don't know which should come first: a bunch of GA meetings or a teeth cleaning. Most professions poker players (decent ones anyway) recognize and avoid their leaks. You RUN towards yours and feel self loathing afterwards and swear that you need to be somewhere that doesn't have them.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Then go back to Reno or Toledo. You are like Goldilocks. OHH...this dentist is too expensive....Oh this dentist only does this....OHH....there is no casino. I've provided you with the search to find what you need. You will need to the leg work.

Oh and by the way, here is a little reality for you. 500 hours is about 3 months of full time employment. 52 weeks x 40 hours per week = 2080. My hourly rate is $225.00 (and that's with a discount).

  7. Go west young man! Route through Louisiana on your way back to Reno. Get you dental work done in Reno regardless of your exacting requirements of what you want done and how which ends up being very unique to your condition. The number of dental professionals in the US that will follow your unique requirements is a very small number. Factor in that you expect to be minimally charged for your dental needs and that makes the number of options that you have minimal as well. Go west Tony!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Seriously Tony you are the ONLY one who thinks you are a "professional" gambler - you are a "professional" nit who cant stand to spend a dime on anything but hotels and gambling.
I hope you made yourself feel better after posting all that nonsense.
The onl thing you have is freedom to travel - you have nothing else that you would want - no woman, no true freinds to hang with you for more than a few hours, no place to call your own, no cat, no car, etc....just another sad aspect of the shitty life you have carved out for yourself.

  9. Tony:

How about this one, in Las Vegas, does dental cleaning as well as extraction, all with sedation. And, it took me 5 minutes to look up, Tony. Just a simple search.

You're smart enough to do your own searches, buddy.

    1. not sure if i wish to slip in or out of vegas, but i looked at the ad. i wish there was a way to get the cost. no one wants to say the cost without going in and paying a fee first. if the cost is several thousand instead of $1000-2000 its too much.

      Delete
    2. Yeah, I really wish there was a way to get that cost, but there's nothing anyone can do about that except throw up their arms and quit.

On second thought....one could simply click on the "contact & visit" button and get their phone number to call them to get an estimate. Or, if one has a really unfortunate aversion to phone conversations, such as yourself, one could simply use the e-mail address provided to share one's symptoms/diagnosis and ask for an estimate:

You can find all that information yourself, Tony. And you can follow up all on your own. You're a smart, capable man, with SOME struggles, but also with a lot of ingenuity when you apply yourself. Try to apply yourself more to troubleshooting life's issues and I think you'll surprise yourself.

  10. Tony calling you a pro poker player is generous at best. To top it off your description of the hard working pro has nothing to do with you. You dont work hard, you don't try and improve your weak game that will only ever beat low steaks games, you put no time into analyzing hands, if you're stuck you chase losses in the pit or on dem machines rather than working hard in +ev situations to get it back over time.

    ReplyDelete
  11. also you don't have a block on "spending money" you have a block on using money for something other than your gambling addiction. just because you are a small winner at poker that doesn't mean you don't have a huge gambling problem. you've lived in poverty for 25 years, often homeless and in bad health 100% because you refuse to do anything but gamble all day every day.

  12. Tony i found a "Gentleman" on Craigslist that will perform something similar to what you're looking for in your area. He puts you under faster than an IV. He does all this quickly too. He basically does this the old fashioned way. He physically knocks your teeth out (this includes wisdom teeth too). I checked and this guy really has great references. He was a heavy weight contender five years ago. It also does a wonderful job humbling out any midlife attitudes.

It seems this blog keeps covering the same territory over and over again. People try to give advice or help and TBC never follows thru. You just have to accept TBC and his mindset are going to prevail. I hope he finds help for his health issues but that is all up to TBC not me.

  16. First it was just tell me where to go I'll fly there, then it has to have a casino, then it has to be a certain price, then they have to work on your time schedule, then not sure you want to go to Vegas...etc... The reason you set up all these conditions which are difficult to meet is because you really don't want to get it done. You're scared and you don't want to spend the money. If you can't find anyplace which meets all your conditions then in your mind it's not your fault it doesn't get done. But it is your choice and your fault it isn't done and isn't going to get done anytime soon. And it is okay if you choose not to get the work done. Not doing it will end up costing you more money in future and more pain but it is, and always will be your choice. There are plenty of dentists out there able to do this work for you. When you are desperate enough you will seek one out.

    3. i definitely wish to get it done. just dont know how to find one willing to do what i wish done. and for a reasonable price. the price in toledo or reno was reasonable, but i want more than just one tooth out. i want a dentist this time--no oral surgeon. oral surgeons wont clean teeth and i wish to do it all in one visit. u wouldnt put out half ur life savings to fix ur teeth either, nor would anyone. so asking me to is quite hypocritical

      Delete
    4. again you don't really want to get it done.you set up almost impossible parameters for someone to meet or want to meet, then when they aren't met you refuse to get done what you need to get done.

My 4 year old niece goes to the dentist and cries less than you.You do have some things in common with her though. You both sleep a lot more than most adults, both don't want to go to a doctor or dentist, both can't drive, both think people owe them things in life (she's right, you're wrong), both read at a comic book level and you're about the same height.

You don't need to be sedated. if you think a minor dental procedure is going to hurt, imagine the pain not getting the work you need done is going to cause.

      Delete
    5. Tony, your fears are not reasonable. Your teeth are not in reasonable shape. Your expectations are not reasonable. A reasonable price for your situation is not the same for other people who have taken care of their teeth all this time.

  17. Tony, I don't know why we continue to bother about you. You ask for advice and help over and over. Then you do absolutely nothing about it. Once again you have shit on those of us who try to help you. Why do you WASTE our time asking for advice and help, when you know you will do nothing about it. Is this just the constant attention you seek? You think it is a WASTE to spend money on dental and medical treatment, yet you can shovel $2000 into a machine in once session and not consider that a WASTE. Do the legwork yourself if you want to find a dentist that suits you. Don't WASTE our time and efforts on something you will never do.

You bitch and moan about paying $13 for a cab, but you WASTE thousands on stupid train fares in a private compartments, and expensive hotels so you can big note yourself. About time you grew up and realized the world is not here to answer your beck and call. Your friends like me have just about had enough of your ego seeking bullshit. How much longer do you think you can treat us like shit Tony, before we finally tell you to "Go fuck yourself."

    1. i'm not getting the type of help i need. im not good at google searches for one thing. for example, i tried to find a laundry here in town which offers pickup and delivery, or at least will do the work for u so u dont need to wash them yourself which it seems u must in the 3 small nearby places. things on google search look like its what u want, but when u click it, u dont see the wording google search showed but instead just the yelp or manta or yellow book ads for all laundries combined (without the precise info u put in the google search u needed). i only need this one businesses ad to come up--and it wont. same for dentists. so many nationwide dentist finding 800 numbers pop up, but not the info u seek. i wrote not only the NJ dentist which wouldnt accept my price info but the NV one too, the MD one, the FL one and the CA one. lets see who replies. its going to be difficult to find one who will knock me out remove a tooth, and do the cleaning all for under $2000. shouldnt be though, the iv is only supposed to cost $300-700 more. at least it was this way toledo and reno. (not in total costs--in extra fees for the iv). the problem is both in reno and toledo these were oral surgeons, not dentists so this wouldnt include the cleaning. i need a DENTIST and finding a dentist who does it himself without using an oral surgeon--this is the hard part. getting a price quote-is next to impossible. they all wish to have u come in because theyre afraid to quote the prices for fear it will scare u off.

unless u went to lots of work to find me a dentist fitting my needs--me not going to one sure isnt treating u like shit. since i didnt find one within a week of the email, u claim this. it might take yrs to find one. it would only be treating u like shit if u got me an appointment and i didnt go.

i will swear to it if i can get this tooth removed as cheaply as the appt i still wish ray wouldnt canceled in toledo ill go. ($650) or the reno price of $1080. im afraid it will be much much more. ill even pay up to $1500-2000 if the cleaning is included. if anyone thinks they can find one in this price range, feel free. must include iv sedation.

ill give them the money to hold upfront if they will be able to provide transportation if i come to their city to do it. that way i cant cancel it. i almost missed the dentist in reno if cooldave wouldnt been there, remember they legally cant iv sedate u unless u have someone with u to take u home instead of using a cab. its the law.

it's also funny you hate doing laundry and pay to have it done. i hate it too but you're dead broke so you should just do it yourself. then again with your clothes it's probably just cheaper to replace them than clean them.

    4. Back in September 2014 I came to Las Vegas. Prior to arriving I spent a lot of time emailing you and making posts in your blog, and agreeing to accompany you to the dentist to get your teeth cleaned and get whatever work you needed done under IV. I gave you two months notice to get your shit together and organize the appointments. I even agreed to stay at that shitty Circus Circus because I knew you could get free roooms there at that time, and so I could make sure you got back to your room safely and I was nearby if you needed help.

All you had to do was make a few phone calls. You did absolutely fucking nothing. I arrived in Las Vegas from Louisianna and you hadn't even booked into Circus Circus like we agreed or made any appointments. All you had was your usual bullshit stories about why you could not do it. You had fucking months to get your act together.

Don't give me this shit about you not being able to do google searches very well. You don't have any problems finding porn sites, stupid political sites and hypocritical bible bashing preacher sites, all preaching doom and gloom and the bullshit Rapture. You Tony are just too fucking lazy to put in the effort yourself.

Read and digest this. No dentist will give you an upfront quote without an examination first. He/she has to examine and determine what work needs to be done. You should have had your teeth cleaned last time you had dental work done as you were advised to have done. What did you do. Once again, absolutely fucking nothing. You didn't turn up or you cancelled your appointments because your teeth were no longer hurting, and gambling was more important to you. Or you gave some bullshit story about not wanting to sit around waiting. Everyone has to wait sometimes Tony. What do you think makes you so special? You have been going on about your teeth for several years now, and you have done virtually nothing about them.

THAT IS WHAT I MEAN ABOUT YOU TREATING YOUR FRIENDS LIKE SHIT. We constantly try to answer your calls for help, only for you to do nothing.
Do you remember that story about the boy who cried "Wolf"? Well most of the people who have tried to help you over the years now don't give a fuck if the Wolf jumps up and bites your stupid head off!

  22. Radical solution of course: Apply for financial aid(medical/dental). Full extractions/upper and lower dentures. Long term fix that mitigates ongoing costs and stress. Improves health, lifestyle, and attitude. Commitment: Must stay put for 2 months and focus on goal. Mark 10 hours per week(1 long day)to set plan in motion with application process, lining up appointments, stabilizing monthly living habitat..etc. With proper planning and $$$ aid, out of pocket once and for all around 3-5K. Pick a city and get started. You can still play all the while you know. This time for something viable. Booking wins as you do will leverage the total cost anyway. Pick a town. Rent a flop room for a month, and yank that train into motion. You have the time, and you will have the money. With a good plan, your fear gets left behind, standing on the tracks...
